The series partially explores the life of Stede Bonnet. Captain Bonnet is regarded as a nobleman who, despite having no aptitude for the profession, decided to abandon his affluent life and leave behind his family in 1717 to prove that he could make it as a pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. Captain Bonnet and his dysfunctional crew battle grave dangers from naval vessels and other vicious pirates while sailing aboard his ship, the Revenge.
