What happened in season 7?
Before we proceed, let’s discuss what happened in season 7 and where it ended.
In the previous season of ‘Orange Is The New Black’, we witness Piper Chapman’s journey as a conflicted woman who struggles hard to separate her former life as an inmate from her present life as a free person. Season 7 largely orbits around the agony of a freed prisoner, Piper, who is trying every bit to pull her life back together and on-track, post-prison.
We know, from the previous seasons, that Piper, during her tenure in the jail, fell in love with another cell inmate Alex Vause. In season 6 episode 13, the two exchange vows of a lifetime, an hour before Piper’s release.
Things start to get messy in season 7, when Piper has to leave Alex behind and start off a new life, without her. As a last piece of advice to her lover, Alex comforts and suggests that Piper find companionship outside of the jail.
Things turn awry and askew when Alex engages herself in an intricate relationship with the guard of the prison, Artesian McCullough. The relationship, which started with intimidation and blackmailing, slowly advances to the far-reaching sale of drugs, mobile phones, and molestation.
At the end of season 7, Alex is transferred to a new jail in Ohio. Citing this, Piper firms up her mind about moving to Ohio, starting life afresh, and staying closer to Alex. That’s how the season ends.
Exploring potential plotlines
So far, we’ve learnt that Alex is still serving her term as an inmate in a prison in Ohio. In order to stay close to Alex, Piper shifts to Ohio. However, life always has separate plans for all of us. And that is exactly what happens with Piper. After her stint in the jail, Piper allows herself to go through a series of self-introspection. She realizes that she no longer can delve into her past and multiply her miseries. That’s when Piper Chapman decides to engage herself in active advocacy and criminal-justice reforms.
Throughout the series, it is shown how various forms of guard barbarism, overcrowding, privatization of jails, funding reductions, extortion, and racial bigotry (among other issues), affect the prisoners’ safety, health, and welfare.
Fans think that it is only a natural course for the show to take to show Piper’s reformation in this light.
What makes the show so popular?
‘Orange Is The New Black’ is Netflix’s officially most-watched series of all times. Jeni Kohan, the creator, has been able to curate a series that is second to nothing on television right now. The number of women the show has is astounding and incredible. Each woman has a story to tell and each story is different in an authentic way.
The manner in which each woman is envisaged is extraordinary and unique. The show projects an array of women belonging to a different race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation – all on a single show. It would be an almost impossible task to think of any other show on television right now that presents that type of scope with a female-centric theme that OITNB does.
