Orange Is the New Black is an adapted series from Piper Kerman’s 2010 memoir. It is based on the 13 months that Piper spent in federal prison on charges of money-laundering charges.
But Netflix’s version of Piper’s story stretches beyond the main character. It includes stories of a diverse group of women confined with her. No television series prior to Orange Is The New Black has ever focused on such a diverse group of women. Each woman has her own story to tell.
And, in the final season, each women’s story consolidates into something more thoughtful. It gives an empathetic insight into the country’s polarized policies on immigration, mental illness, empowerment, and growth.
Orange Is The New Black is a sharp blend of dark humour and dramatic heft.
