ABC’s fantasy series Once Upon A Time will return this year, but not in the way you imagined. The show that weaved fairy tales into a modern world, ended two years ago, but its story hasn’t.
Highlights —
- The Once Upon A Time reboot is going to be an epic one
- Reboot to feature Disney princes and princesses
- Will the reboot series be available on Disney+ in 2021?
Fantasy fans, now is the time for you to rejoice because ABC’s Once Upon A Time reboot is seriously happening. Creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz haven’t had enough of the fairy tale world and are bringing you some real Disney magic this time. They’re teaming up with former OUAT writer Brigette Hales to launch a new ABC show which is sure to be nothing short of epic. The show is titled Epic, set in the fairy tale universe of Disney.
The series is described as an anthology, which means each episode will probably explore one story from start to finish. This format of storytelling, of developing different stories tied together by a single theme, into episode-sized versions has seen resurgence in recent times, especially since Netflix’s Black Mirror and Amazon Prime Video’s Modern Love anthologies were lauded for their incredible execution.
We’re not expecting to see familiar faces in the Once Upon A Time reboot but let’s take a look at what we can expect.
The ‘Epic’ reboot
Once Upon A Time ran successfully for seven seasons, by uniting legendary fairy tale characters in a single universe. Epic too, will be resonant with the series, but popular characters from fairy tales will not be playing central characters.
The romantic anthology series is described as being set in a “Disney-like” Enchanted Forest, and will center on a whole new set of new heroes, villains, princes, princesses and all manner of magical beings. While it will pay homage to the classic signposts we’re all familiar with from the stories we grew up with, Epic will endeavor to create a whole new batch of characters as it explores love in all its forms.” according to Deadline.
Whether each season will tackle a single story is difficult to say, as the show-runners will have to bring some Disney-like magic through the course of each story. Maybe the Once Upon a Time reboot will follow new characters that inhabit the world of a Disney classic.

The reboot will feature Disney princes and princesses
Fans will agree that one of the most exciting things about a Disney movie is its intro visual. It is sort of like a sneak-peek into the world of magic you’re seconds away from being transported to. The viewer almost instantly expects to see princes and princesses appear in all their pomp and glory. And that is exactly what you will see in Epic.

One can imagine that Horowitz and Kitsis, and now even Hales will do their best so Once Upon A Time fans can feel the old magic return to their screens. They’ve promised to pay homage to the classics, but we hope that the ‘spin’ they’ve decided to add really does represents love in all forms. We can’t help but wonder if that’s a subtle hint at the much needed LGBTQ+ representation in the Disney universe. We’d love to see a new modern approach through our favourite old characters!
Here’s hoping that the show will focus more on the core elements of Disney fairytales and the messages they communicate.
Will the reboot be available on Disney+ in 2021?
All we know is that the series is currently in development at ABC studios. There’s no need to be worried because we’ve already seen the writing trio collaborate before. We bet Kitsis, Horowitz and Hales have just another hit on their hands with Epic.
There’s no news from ABC or Disney on an expected premiere date or the casting, but we should hear from them soon. “Deadline” reported that the trio has co-created Epic, but Hales might be the series’ creative lead as she’s writing the script.
Kitsis and Horowitz will be “supervising and helping shepherd the project through the development process through Kitsis & Horowitz Prods.” We’ll keep an eye out for more details, but it would indeed be magical if Epic could premiere next year.
