Will the open-ended season 8 finale give way to a season 9 for ‘Homeland’?
In April 2020, the stellar Showtime series, ‘Homeland‘ finally came to an end after a span of 8 seasons. The Emmy award-winning espionage thriller introduced viewers to a fascinating new world of American diplomacy, politics, and secret agents and had them hooked.
Highlights:
- ‘Homeland’: A masterpiece in its own right
- The case of the open-ended finale
- Will this finally open the doors for a season 9?
The series was adapted by writers and producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa from the famous Israeli television series ‘Prisoners of War‘. ‘Homeland’ saw soaring popularity and high ratings right off the bat. Its fast-paced writing and applaudable performances made the show an instant success with both critics as well as viewers. The series, somehow, always managed to uphold the high standards throughout the years until its very end. But, now, since the show has been cancelled, is there scope for more? Did the finale of season 8 open doors for a brand-new season 9?
Homeland’: A masterpiece in its own right
‘Homeland’ revolved around the character of Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), an intrepid CIA agent diagnosed with bipolar disorder and her covert operations as a secret agent. The premise saw Carrie suspecting Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), an American prisoner of war, of having become a double agent. As the series progressed, a romantic relationship developed between the two which came to an end with Brody’s death at the end of season 3.

The subsequent seasons revolved around Carrie’s relationship with mentor, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), as well as her daughter, Frannie, while she struggles to balance her work with her personal life. The series, throughout its run, witnessed Carrie undertaking a string of missions in various countries to preserve the security of her homeland. It took the viewers on a complicated journey with a complex, dauntless woman at the centre of it. The show was a masterpiece in its own right.
‘Homeland’ Season 8: The case of the open-ended finale
The final season, featuring 12 episodes, did attempt to try a number of loose ends. Carrie’s loyalty towards her mentor, Saul, was tested when she was given the mission to take him out and, being frustrated with the American government that had only pushed her in the way of danger, she found help in the Russians.
The series finale saw the death of translator and Russian mole Anna Pomerantseva, Carrie trying to deceive her mentor into thinking that his life was on the line, as well as a bit of her relationship with a Russian GRU officer Yevgeny Gromov (Costa Ronin). The final episode closed with a time leap of 2 years where Saul got a copy of Carrie’s memoir ‘Tyranny of Secrets – Why I Had to Betray My Country’ in advance and was able to extract hidden messages from it such as information about the missile defence system in Russia. In the end, Carrie’s character came a full circle as she herself became a double agent.
The conclusion was relatively open-ended as it didn’t give fans much closure either regarding the status of Carrie and Saul’s relationship, or her relationship with her daughter, and even left the future of her relationship with Gromov uncertain. This now has fans asking for a season 9 that gives solid answers to their queries and has a bulletproof, closed ending.

Will this finally open the doors for a season 9?
It is highly plausible. Showrunners, Gordon and Gansa, have both suggested their interest in continuing with the series. Gordon was heard saying, “Never say never”, and Gansa went further to say, “As [co-creator Howard Gordon] has said, ‘never say never’. All of us are happy with where we ended the show and the series. Another chapter doesn’t feel necessary at the moment. But who knows what’s going to happen? Who knows what Claire and Mandy want to do? Who knows what Howard wants to do? We don’t know what that looks like. For now, it feels like closure”, implying that there may be more to come in the future.
Considering the positive responses from the makers and the cast members, season 9 may not be such a far-fetched idea after all. Do you think season 9 of ‘Homeland’ is possible? What are your views about the season 8 finale? Tell us what you think in the comment box below.
