Fans binge-watched all 10 episodes of the teen comedy, they began desperately asking for more. So, will we get a second season?
Is Never Have I Ever cancelled?
The good news is that Netflix has officially renewed Never Have I Ever for a second season. The teenage drama, that’s comedy for the most part, is created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher.
The story revolves around Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl who has a lot going on in her life. At the start of the series, she’s just lost her father, lost the ability to walk, regained the use of her legs again, and is then determined to change the way her peers look at her.
This basically means, she wants to become cool and popular. Her journey to become one of the cool kids at her high school introduces many twists and turns which leave her in a love triangle of sorts. And now, we’ll get to see who she chooses between Ben and Paxton.
What does the lead star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan have in mind?
In an interview, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan — who stars as Devi Vishwakumar — opened up about her expectations for Never Have I Ever Season 2.
“I just want to see Devi start loving and appreciating herself because I think a lot of people are missing that from their lives, whether you’re a kid or an adult,” she said. “People need to learn that you need to love yourself first.”
The 18-year-old then shared more about her hopes for Devi’s future when speaking to a leading entertainment portal. She said that it ultimately boils down to embracing herself and those closest to her, as well as facing her own grief.
“Three things [that Devi needs to do]— understanding that she needs to be more appreciative of her family and her friends because her friends do a lot for her. Her friends really are her dear ones. And also understanding where her mother’s coming from. Then also the idea of approaching that grief, confronting it, having that battle, even though it’s something uncomfortable to even think about, [but] actually just running towards it and facing it, dealing with it head on.”
She further added, “And then number three, of course, embracing her culture because that is so important in a world where identity is everything. It’s how you portray yourself. It’s how you show yourself to the world and how everybody will view you, but also how you accept yourself. And I think if Devi does those magic three, she might be a little bit more at peace with herself.”
Who will return for season 2?
Along with the lead actor Ramakrishnan, Poorna Jagannathan who stars as Nalini, Richa Moorjani who plays Kamala, Jaren Lewison as Ben Gross, Darren Barnet who stars as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, Lee Rodriguez who plays Fabiola and Ramona Young as Eleanor, all will make a comeback for season 2.
However, it’s unclear if John McEnroe will return to the teenage drama even though he previously said he’d be interested.
When will season 2 be released?
We know that Netflix releases are dependent on when the show got the green light and the amount of post-production that goes into it.
Most Netflix shows have to wait at least a year before they can return but due to the pandemic and with the lockdowns enforced, film and television productions across the world have been stalled.
So at this stage, it will be difficult to comment when filming will be taking place on any shows. But if everything goes well, the production for most shows will begin in a few months. We can expect the show to return before fall of 2021.
