Netflix dramedy ‘Never Have I Ever’ is renewed for season 2 and will hit the platform sooner than you think, confirms Mindy Kaling. Mindy gave a global platform to Indian-American teen emotions but did the show fell to hackneyed view on the diaspora?
‘Never Have I Ever’: Never-ever or forever?
Created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, the series is about a young girl Devi Vishwakumar (played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) from Sherman Oaks, California who is dealing with the death of her father.
Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan sparkled as an Indian-American teen dealing with culture, identity, and high-school woes in one of the most relatable series of the year for the diaspora.
The series contains dozens of well-executed moments which will compel you to click the next episode button. But the show is also marred by a lazy piece of writing when it comes to the depiction of the diaspora culture on American TV that only an Indian can detect.
Looking at some of the scenes from the initial episodes of season 1, one gets the feeling that Indians haven’t moved on when it comes to broadening their perspectives. But the show got better and better towards the end, which leaves us hopeful for an exceptional season 2 of ‘Never Have I Ever’.

The series got an overwhelming reception globally when it premiered on Netflix this April. It became the global number one show for Netflix during the week it was released. We only hope that Mindy Kaling keeps the cliché down and the mood up in the second instalment of ‘Never Have I Ever’. We hope that Devi has more to her adolescent life than the obsession of getting laid.
For season 1, the series sometimes repeated the old stereotypes that are part of American TV since forever. But we hope that with season 2, ‘Never Have I Ever’ does something that no diaspora show has ever done, never-ever!

It also scored an impressive 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. And the consensus reads, “’ Never Have I Ever’s’ fresh take on the coming-of-age comedy is hilariously honest, sweetly smart, and likely to have viewers falling head over heels for charming newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan”.
The show has given weighted representation to South Asians on American TV. Season 2 has the potential of giving us an exhilarating experience if ‘Never Have I Ever’ goes deeper into the diaspora life, a thing that has never been attempted.
