Netflix revolutionizes African television with its ‘Queen Sono’
With ‘Queen Sono’, Netflix has made a streaming history. It is the first African series to be produced by an American streaming platform and has a primarily African cast and crew. ‘Quantico’ actress, Pearl Thusi, plays the role of Queen Sono, a special operations group field agent who finds herself facing off her ex-boyfriend, Shandu, a former agent and now the leader of a terrorist organization called Watu Wema. Created by Kagiso Lediga, the show has been shot in 37 different locations in Africa and also stars Vuyo Dabula, Chi Mhende, Sechaba Morojele, Rob Van Vuuren, Loyiso Madinga, Kate Liquorish, Enhle Maphumulo, Khathu Ramabulana, Abigail Kubeka, and Connie Chiume.

The beauty of this series is that it has not been westernized and is well-rooted in the African culture. The use of several languages that haven’t really been heard on mainstream television yet, along with its geopolitical backcloth makes this series distinctive. It’s one of the best spy thrillers one can watch on Netflix and is packed with fantastic action scenes and dramatic thrills.
Despite having been compared to other American thrillers such as ‘Alias’ and ‘Homeland’, the series has created a mark of its own. The positive response received by the series let Netflix renew it for a second season.
‘Queen Sono’ Season 2 – What is in store for the viewers?
Netflix announced that ‘Queen Sono’ has been renewed for another season on April 28, 2020.
No release date has been assigned to the upcoming season yet and that is primarily because of the coronavirus pandemic. Ever since the onset of COVID-19, the production of several shows has been halted or postponed. But to the relief of viewers, the show will definitely be back very soon.
Explaining her expectations from the next season, Dorothy Ghettuba, the executive responsible for African content on Netflix said, “The first season of ‘Queen Sono’ marked the beginning of our journey to introduce the world to exciting stories that are made in Africa. It was an unprecedented representation of a strong female black lead in African television. In the first season of ‘Queen Sono’, we saw grit and glamour, strength and vulnerability, as well as the past and the present, converge into a powerful narrative that explored the complexities and nuances of the African experience. Kagiso Lediga and the Diprente team delivered a compelling story that resonated with our viewers and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for ‘Queen Sono’ in this coming season”.

It is difficult to say, but considering that its strong, undercover female agent protagonist is similar to ‘Homeland’s’ CIA officer lead, Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), there may be some inevitable similarities. Bad-ass heroines doing everything in their power to protect their respective countries and getting romantically involved with the enemy are important plot points for both the shows.

‘Queen Sono’ season 2 may be taking notes from its successful American predecessor for a solid run. ‘Homeland’ blew the audiences away with its impeccable writing and a stellar cast and aired for an extremely successful 8 seasons. ‘Queen Sono’ has just started its journey and has done it with a bang, with a power-packed plot and talented actors. Whether there will be a ‘Homeland’ connect in the upcoming season remains to be seen, season 2 is already in the list of one of the most anticipated shows on Netflix.
