The award-winning show released its final season this year, here’s a look back at ‘Homeland’s’ most unexpected deaths, that left us shocked and heartbroken.
Time and again popular TV shows choose to kill off their important characters to maintain a certain level of thrill and remain off-course to get a lead in the ratings race. This, however, leads to fans agonizing (imagine a Carrie Mathison cry face) the departure of their beloved characters through the course of the show. One such show is the spy thriller series ‘Homeland‘. The award-winning show has managed to take us through some unpredictable plots and betrayals. But what managed to keep us at the edge of our seats was its innumerable killings. As the show came to an end this year, let’s recall some of its most tragic deaths.
- The ultimate sacrifice of Peter Quinn
- Execution of Carie’s baby daddy
- Carrie’s go-to guy, Piotrowski
The ultimate sacrifice of Peter Quinn
The season 6 finale of ‘Homeland’ saw one of the most shocking deaths on television. A beloved character of the psychological thriller series, Peter Quinn, who had survived death once before (Season 5), had to make the ultimate sacrifice for the president-elect (Elizabeth Keane). In his last heroic scene, we saw him driving the President’s SUV while dodging a flurry of bullets to safely get Carrie and Keane on a Midtown side street.
In an interview with “Variety”, Rupert Friend, who played Peter Quinn, responded to his death on ‘Homeland’ and whether it was an act of patriotism?
“In that moment I do think it’s an act of patriotism. The title “America First” pertains very much to that moment”.
He added how there was his life, Carrie’s life, and the president-elect’s life and none of them mattered more than the president’s. Whether or not you agree with her politics, there was an act of protecting the office as opposed to the individual, which he thought mattered very much to Quinn.
Friend further added that his death was bittersweet but slightly peaceful as his character had been through so much and even though it wasn’t their design, could now finally rest.
Execution of Carie’s baby daddy
One of the most important characters on ‘Homeland’, Marine sergeant Nicholas Brody, was killed off in season 3 of ‘Homeland’. Given the number of times, he had magically evaded death like a cockroach in the past seasons, Brody’s death was a hard pill to swallow.
Let’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we? Early in the season 3 finale, we saw Brody assassinating the head of the IRG. Later, he gets a safe house with Carrie while waiting to be rescued by the Navy SEAL. Much to our shock, Brody was captured by the Iranian soldiers. He was declared an enemy of the Iranian government for which he was sentenced to death. Poor Carrie had to witness the love of her life, and the father of her baby, get hanged from a crane in a square full of people cheering at his execution.
It was surely a bold move by the makers of ‘Homeland’ as killing your main lead is not something you come across in every show. The co-creator of ‘Homeland’, who also co-wrote the finale of season 3, Alex Gansa told “The Daily Beast” that Brody’s shelf life had expired.
“It was time. We spent a lot of hours in the story room figuring out what we could do with his character, and a lot of the emotional landscape had been crossed. We didn’t want to repeat ourselves”.
Carrie’s go-to guy, Piotrowski
A heartbreaking departure is what we would like to call the killing of Max Piotrowski. A loved character that had been part of the show since its beginning, was killed in its final season. Piotrowski (played by Maury Sterling) was the longtime loyal ally of Carrie who helped her crack missions through his complex computer networks, communications, and surveillance systems.
In season 8, we saw Max being held hostage by Haqqani’s son Jalal who threatens to kill him if his father, the leader of the Taliban dies. Much to our shock, President Hayes decides Piotrowski’s life isn’t worth saving as he is just a technician, leaving Jalal to immediately kill Max.

In an interview with “The Wall Street Journal”, Maury Sterling who plays the role of Max Piotrowski said: “Nobody is safe. That’s part of what makes it good.” Fans surely didn’t agree as he was later killed in the spy thriller series. Many of them took to Twitter to share their anguish over Piotrowski’s fate.
