- Moira Rose has the coolest accent ever
- Her character is instrumental to the show’s success
The story follows Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy), his wife Moira (Catherine O’Hara), and their adult, spoiled children Alexis (Annie Murphy) and David (Dan Levy). The Roses are left penniless after being defrauded by their business manager and are unexpectedly forced to rebuild their lives. Their sole remaining asset is ‘Schitt’s Creek’, a small town Johnny bought as a joke for David’s birthday. The Roses relocate to Schitt’s Creek, moving into adjacent rooms in a ramshackle motel, without money, and with each other.
In a time when sitcoms have become overbearingly popular and, sometimes, tedious to sit through, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ shows how it’s done. It has the perfect formula for success – colourful, quirky supporting characters, powerful comedic writing, and a Moira Rose.
A former star and now a fan favourite, let’s see how Moira Rose from ‘Schitt’s Creek’ became television’s favourite character!
A self-invented style icon, Moira Rose is eccentric and wears it with pride
The matriarch of the Rose family, Moira is the former star of a once-popular daytime soap opera called ‘Sunrise Bay’. She played Vivien Blake, a character known for boldly slapping other characters when they crossed a line. Moira is the superior character with wonderfully edgy wardrobe choices and sports heels that make even the viewers dizzy. Moira is the crowning jewel of the Roses, and one of the funniest characters to have been on television recently!
Moira is forced to live in Schitt’s Creek with her husband and her adult children, after losing all her fortune. For someone who’s been completely stripped off their wealth, Moira finds comfort in what’s left of her personal belongings, and her lavish designer clothes console her.

She also wears elaborate designer wigs that range in style, from platinum blonde bobs to pastel-pink and even red! Moira has a Cruella de Vil vibe and wears a black and white wardrobe inspired by Daphne Guinness. She poses as a style icon, but her outfits serve as a defence mechanism against the town she hates. Her wardrobe choices also set her apart from the other residents of Schitt’s Creek, who only shop at Elmdale’s Blouse Barn.
Moira feels an obligation to impart her knowledge on anything she deems appropriate. She’s not mean or snobbish, she just lacks general reading skills and genuinely believes everyone can learn something from her. While that’s not always true, Moira is incredibly true to herself and that’s something we can surely learn from her!
Moira Rose has the coolest accent ever
Moira is starkly different from the rest of her family. She finds it difficult to express her feelings, but she can still be loving and kind. Before moving to Schitt’s Creek, Moira knew practically nothing about her children, and their dreams and ambitions. But her character development through the six seasons has been nothing less than a joyride.
Another factor that influences the viewer’s love for Moira Ross is her heightened, dramatised accent. Everything Moira does is usually accompanied with a theatrical flair, whether it is putting on a wig or making enchiladas. But her over-the-top persona is accompanied by her indistinguishable accent, and the use of words like ‘pettifogging’ and ‘frippet’.
Her love for unusual words and pronunciations of simple words like ‘baby’ has given her character quite the legendary status. Catherine O’Hara, who plays Moira, believes that her character’s unique accent is actually a souvenir from her world travels.
Her character is instrumental to the show’s success
While her family builds their lives in Schitt’s Creek over six seasons, Moira doesn’t veer from her desire to leave. But even then, she’s more than her extravagant wigs and unconventional wardrobe. Moira’s vast vocabulary of arcane and archaic words, and her confidence, speaks to her love of a glamour-filled life.
In the first few seasons, Moira seems in sync with her son David, but she doesn’t really understand her daughter. When she grows from an inattentive mother to an attentive one, her character development is a triumph to witness!
Moira has never shied away from expressing her dissatisfaction towards the town she’s forced to call home. She’s unafraid of speaking her mind and steals every scene she’s in. Perhaps it’s her confidence that is infectious or her smile, but her comic range is quite extraordinary. Whether you’re a fan of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ or have only just discovered it, it’s absolutely impossible not to adore her. And even more impossible not to be entrenched in the hilarity that is ‘Schitt’s Creek’.
