Stephen Moyer had tough competition during the audition for True Blood. Why? Benedict Cumberbatch read for Bill Compton’s role.
Finding about “could-have-been” of TV is always exciting. The close-call castings that could have changed how favourite television characters are perceived are like the magic eight balls of television. In one such rare “almost” event, our very own Sherlock Holmes could have been a vampire. That’s right folks! Benedict Cumberbatch was this close to landing the role of Bill Compton in True Blood.

True Blood –What’s the buzz?
Based on horror novels The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, True Blood is an OG vampire romance drama. Perhaps one of the most graphically violent and intense shows on HBO, True Blood was replete with gore, violence, love triangles, and sex –you know, the usual.
Since its premiere in 2008, the show had a fun run for seven seasons, although the final season did not quite agree with most fans. Blessed with some of the most gorgeous actors Hollywood has ever produced, True Blood had Alexander Skarsgard, Anna Paquin, and Stephen Moyer playing the show’s central love triangle –Eric, Sookie, and Bill respectively.
Like most other vampire romances, True Blood followed the story of Sookie Stackhouse (a half-angel if we can at all call her that) who is drawn into the world of vampires who have come back from the dead. Set in the fictional Louisiana town called Bon Temps, True Blood explores the blurred fantastical line between the human and the supernatural. We follow through the intertwined stories of vampire drama, romance and thrill as all hell breaks loose in the “vampverse” of True Blood.
It’s hard to imagine Anna Paquin not paired with Stephen Moyer
Much of True Blood revolves around the relationship of Bill and Sookie, played by Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, respectively. Theirs is a friendship-turned-romantic relationship that transpired as scorching heat on the screens ever since the two hooked up for the first time. Sookie remains loyal to Bill until ahead of season 4 when she discovers that Bill had been spying on her all the while. Nevertheless, the two continued to project great chemistry on screen until the end of the show.
The chemistry between Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer was so great that the two actors even decided to take it off the screen. Before we knew it, Paquin and Moyer married each other in 2010 contrary to the fate of their characters in True Blood. Speaking of the toe-curling chemistry between the two, show-runner Alan Ball said,
“They’re falling in love [in their first scene together] because they hooked up on the second episode. The producer called me from the second episode and was, like, ‘I think you should know that Stephen and Anna are hooking up.’ … It was never an issue, they were total pros, and now they have two kids together. … They thought they were keeping it secret from everybody. The whole first season, everybody knew.”
Keeping in mind the incredible pairing of Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, it’s hard to imagine someone else in the shoes of Bill Compton on True Blood, let alone Benedict Cumberbatch.
Benedict Cumberbatch auditioned for ‘True Blood’
Get over the sultry charm of Sherlock, and imagine Benedict Cumberbatch as the steamy hot vampire with fangs on True Blood. In an interview at the “Vulture Festival”, Alan Ball confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch had indeed auditioned for the role of Bill Compton in True Blood. Not just Cumberbatch, Ball revealed a few other Hollywood stars who had read for other roles including the Sookie Stackhouse. He said,
“I read Benedict Cumberbatch. He came and read for Bill. Jessica Chastain read for Sookie. Jennifer Lawrence read for, in season three there’s this werepanther girl, and she was great.”
Apparently, Jennifer Lawrence would have been perfect to play Jason’s romantic interest except she was only 17 at the time and the age difference between the two actors would have come across as weird.
As for Benedict Cumberbatch, we know he is a storehouse of pure volcanic talent and could pull off any role just as easy. How a man can be that perfect is beyond comprehension. Benedict Cumberbatch surely would have made a great Bill Compton but would he have looked as great as Stephen Moyer with Anna Paquin? We’d never know now, would we?
