‘Modern Family’ was like a breath of fresh air for an otherwise traditional American sitcom audience. However, it is debatable if the producers were right in pulling the plug or if they should have gone for a ‘Modern Family’ Season 12, preferably with a leap of five years.
Producer Steve Levitan and co-producer Christopher Lloyd first generated the idea for their popular American sitcom, ‘Modern Family’, while retelling funny stories about their wives and kids. Little did they know that what started as a casual joke, would lead to 22 Emmys and 82 Emmy nominations! This prodigy of a show, ‘Modern Family’, pulled the curtains down on its productions after completing 11 seasons, leaving fans wanting for a season 12 renewal.
How modern was ‘Modern Family’?
Lloyd and Levitan’s mockumentary ‘Modern Family’ earned its recognition at a time when experimentation with content was a far-fetched concept. The concept for the show was built up surrounding three modern offbeat families– a stepfamily, a nuclear family, and a same-sex family. The audience soon realized that it would be like no other common family comedies as they coiled into the lives of the Pritchett, Dunphy, and Tucker families.
Jay is a sixty-something man, married to the beautiful Gloria with whom he has two sons– one from Gloria’s previous husband and the other their own. Pritchett’s son, Mitchell, is gay and is married to Cameron Tucker and they both have a girl who’s been adopted. Jay’s daughter, Claire, is a beautiful, smart, young woman married to Phil Dunphy with whom she has three kids, a son and two girls.
With laughter and some tears, the show made its audience sing to the tune of this beautiful family. Perhaps, this is why, fans have mulled over, now and often, on a season 12 renewal for the American sitcom, ‘Modern Family’.
‘Modern Family’ went out while still on a high ride
For 11 years, the Pritchett, Tucker, and Dunphy families evolved and grew together and the viewers watched them closely as the show made them a part of this modern family. Season 11 of ‘Modern Family’ tied the loose strings, opened new possibilities for the characters, and bid farewell to the audience, leaving on a high note. In the last days of the show, the viewers resonated with the characters as Dylan and Haley started on the journey of raising twins, Jay coped with his life after retirement, Gloria finally started her career as a realtor, and Mitchell and Cameron contemplated moving away and adopting a second child. Albeit doubtful, a renewal for ‘Modern Family’ Season 12 would be dreams come true.

‘Modern Family’ renewals and spin-offs in the talks
The idea of a season 12 renewal for the popular American sitcom, ‘Modern Family’ might be tempting, but since life isn’t fair, it is not on the cards right now. However, talks about a spin-off for the show has been making rounds and the fans are excited. In a Deadline interview, Levitan commented on the idea of a spin-off, saying, “I think that there are a couple of writers who are thinking about well, is there a Mitch and Cam spin-off, but they’re just thinking about it. They’re using this time that we have now to think about it if there’s something there. I’m not driving this but … those characters are, of course, near and dear to me, and I certainly think that they’re strong enough to carry a show”. Co-producer Lloyd added, “I’m not sure but we would be probably dumb to not explore it. However, doing a spin-off is fraught in a lot of ways and we won’t do it unless we feel confident there’s something there, I don’t want to say it’s a long shot, it’s under discussion but we’ll see. We don’t want to jump into something like that, particularly because ‘Modern Family’ is a tough act to follow, but that is a possibility”.
Although, season 12 might be quite a long shot for ‘Modern Family’, a spin-off for this fan favourite show, with a five years leap into the lives of the characters, might still be feasible. What are some of your favourite moments from ‘Modern Family’? Let us know in the comments below!
