What were we laughing about: Ingredients for the success of ‘Modern Family’
‘Modern Family’ was the insanely big-sized dysfunctional family comedy, taking on a large ensemble cast, comprising three family units – multi-ethnic, trans-generational, and a gay couple with an adopted Asian baby. And needless to say, the series pulled off each subject with utmost clarity and being funny at the same time.
The success of ‘Modern Family’ is a no brainer. We have seen a lot of bland shows in the genre achieving huge popularity. What makes ‘Modern Family’ special is that it walked across the humour minefield carrying all these sensitive subjects on its shoulders and made an excellent sitcom with their great cast including Sophia Vergara.
‘Modern Family’ treaded its way to greatness with care and some awesome comedy, but later on, faltered on the very elements that were the pillars of its success. Once a maze of opposite family members trapped together, the characters turned into rigid caricatures of themselves over 11 seasons. “Guardian” who initially praised ‘Modern Family’ for taking the risk on sensitive subjects, was disappointed when the series became draggy and rigid.

Will the world’s favourite sitcom return with Sophia Vergara and a new season?
‘Modern Family’ achieved a lot of milestones in the course of 11 seasons. They earned whooping 22 Emmy and instantly became the world’s favourite show. No wonder the ardent fans of the sitcom want to know whether the Dunphy-Prichett-Tucker families will ever open the gates for ‘Modern Family’ Season 12, or this goodbye was goodbye forever.
The co-creator of ‘Modern Family’ Christopher Lloyd admitted to “Entertainment Weekly” that the show’s decision to end on Phil and Claire’s illuminated porch light was to signify that the family will reunite. His statement keeps our optimism levels high. We can expect a reunion, a twelfth season, or a spin-off.
He later clarified that the light doesn’t mean that ‘Modern Family’ will reunite again for season 12. All he meant was that the characters will live on in the audiences’ mind. Lloyd again reignited the hopes saying,
“Very preliminary conversations about spinning off some characters”.
Moreover, he hinted that it can happen in a year or two. He added,
“That could be a year from now, we catch up with one or two or three people and then other characters from the show perhaps drop-in”.
Latest updates on ‘Modern Family’ Season 12 and a spin-off
As per October 2020, there’s no news to renew ‘Modern Family’ for season 12. The possible reason for silence on the spin-off or renewal of the new season is due to the fact that the year is reeling under the pandemic. The studios have already faced shutdowns as a preventive measure.
Most of the production houses are trying to schedule the previously struck projects. ‘Modern Family’ can come up with twelfth season or spin-off after the situation becomes normal. We can expect the return of the same cast if the show reboots.
Sophia Vergara, who played Gloria on the show, was particularly emotional when the series ended. She told Australia’s “Daily Telegraph”, “It was the dream job and if I could do it all again I would and I wouldn’t change anything. Everything was perfect – the scripts, the cast, the writers … We became a family, so it’s hard to say goodbye”.
