ABC finally closed the book on its mega-hit ‘Modern Family’ after 11 seasons, 250 episodes and 22 Emmy wins, at least for now.
Co-created by Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd, the sitcom wrapped up its run with back-to-back episodes that sent many family members away from their home in Los Angeles in the final season of ‘Modern Family’. But the ending left the literal light on for a future spin-off.

It is seen that in the final season of ‘Modern Family’, Jay (Ed O’Neill) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) travel to Colombia together, with the former ultimately studying Spanish. Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) have moved to Missouri with their newly expanded family. Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Dylan (Reid Ewing) move into the former home of Mitch and Cam, with their twins. To attend college, Luke (Nolan Gould) is moving to Portland, Oregon. Alex is going to Switzerland to work with her boss turned love interest (who happens to be Haley’s ex). For a year, Manny (Rico Rodriguez) is going to France. And now, empty nestlings, Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) chose to hit the road in a baseball stadium travelling RV.
Will ‘Modern Family’ get a spin-off?
‘Modern Family’ co-creator Christopher Lloyd acknowledged the emotional and open-ended series finale and said that the decision of the show to end on the illuminated porch light of Phil and Claire was more than a symbolic one while speaking to “Entertainment Weekly”.
“The intention of that image was more to make people imagine that the family will reunite. That’s a lovely thing people have in their lives when they move on, that there’s a home base, and that you can come back to that base,”
Lloyd explained.

Lloyd also confirmed that there have been some “very preliminary conversations about spinning off some characters” behind the scenes, indicating that the ‘Modern Family’ door is, at the very least, ajar.
“That could be a year from now, we catch up with one or two or three people and then other characters from the show perhaps drop-in”, he mused, adding yet another caveat, “It could be something like that. But I don’t want to suggest that that’s a real thing, because it isn’t yet. It’s a thing we knock around”.
Supposed ‘Modern Family’ spin-off
Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, co-creators of ‘Modern Family’, shared their thoughts on a potential spin-off of the award-winning comedy series from ABC. “It’s unlikely, but not totally out of the question, as of April 2020”, they said.
“I’m not thinking about that personally at the moment”, said Levitan.
“I assume there are a few authors who think yeah, there’s a spin-off between Mitch and Cam, but they’re literally just dreaming about it. They’re using the time we need to think about it now, if there’s anything out there”
According to “Out Magazine”.
“I’m not driving this, but I’m a huge Jesse and Eric fan, and those characters are close and dear to me, of course, and I definitely think they’re strong enough to have a show”,
He added.
“For me, I really felt that after working on ‘Modern Family’ for 12 years and almost exclusively, what I needed creatively was to work on something new”, He added.
“We wanted to get them off on a new journey, and it seemed symmetrical to have Mitchell follow Cam to someplace and maybe be around Cam’s family because Cam had played that role in Mitchell’s life for the last 11 years”
“Cam had this opportunity to do something wonderful and exciting, Mitchell felt all right, which makes it my duty to let him pursue his dream, and I’m going to go with him and see what life is like for me.”
Some fans have their fingers crossed for future episodes of the Dunphy-Pritchett family. Before then, episodes of the ‘Modern Family’ are available for binge-watching on ABC and Hulu streaming website. Do you have any spin-off ideas for ‘Modern Family’? Let us know in the comments section below.
