Though Ben Hoffman’s new Netflix adult animated comedy ‘Hoops’ Season 1 made it to the headlines, the show received tonnes of negative comments. So, will there be a season 2 of ‘Hoops’ after receiving bad comments and low ratings? Let’s take a look.
Netflix‘s ‘Hoops’ has a compelling sports-focused concept, as well as a stellar voice cast, and yet the adult animated comedy is getting overwhelmingly negative reviews across the board. Created by Ben Hoffman, the latest sitcom based in rural Kentucky is led by Jake Johnson as a high school basketball coach. The series is also produced in particular by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the brains behind ‘Spider-Man: The Spider-Verse’.

Johnson has voiced Ben Hopkins, the foul-mouthed basketball coach of the Lenwood High Colts. Despite Ben Hopkins getting his sights set on a job in the big leagues, he is forced to lead a ragtag squad whose best player is an awkward 7-foot-tall newcomer. Ben’s personal life also faces some complicated matters as his best friend Ron (Ron Funches) is dating his estranged wife Shannon (Natasha Leggero). It is also seen that Ben lives in the shadow of his father, Barry Hopkins (Rob Riggle), a former professional basketball player with a reputation in the community.
‘Hoops’ reviews are so bad
There’s not much room for the fantastic in this tale of unhappy educators and anxious teenagers. Apart from the odd musical number (all passable but often forgotten), ‘Hoops’ is more ‘King of the Hill’ than ‘The Simpsons’. But it has failed to show the growth of characters and makes them linger in silence. ‘Hoops’ was created on a story portraying the risks of middle America in the 21st century, but fails to do so because of its lame jokes.
Ben’s attempt to be a good basketball coach is not especially interesting either, mainly because he’s a one-dimensional character who’s only good at getting frustrated and destroying anything he touches. Ben’s troubled relationship with Shannon may be the most exciting thing about ‘Hoops’, but by the end of season 1, that story seems to be at a dead end as well.

At present, ‘Hoops’ Season 1 retains a dismal 20 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience response is a few notches under 50 percent, which for any TV show is far from stellar. The consensus notes that the series lacks a vision and that it makes filthy humour its priority over character development, and this animated comedy could not be saved by the voice cast.
Is there a season 2 of ‘Hoops’?
After just one season, the adult animated sitcom, ‘Hoops’, was cancelled on Netflix as per “Variety”. The show premiered on August 21. Netflix looks at the audience of a show versus its expense, and, in the case of ‘Hoops’, has decided not to continue with season 2.
Unfortunately, as the series hasn’t been given a go-ahead for season 2, there’s no trailer yet. Fans can still watch the first season of ‘Hoops’ on Netflix.
