What the paparazzi has been able to gather from recent comments by Director Chad Stahelski, Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch and Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, work has already begun, and there is an ETA for the John Wick spin-off TV series The Continental.
No one would have been able to comprehend how far a random action-thriller could go. Of course, John Wick had the star power of Keanu Reeves to thank. But even then, from a standalone film going on to become a major franchise and then a spin-off TV series? Kudos Chad Stahelski.
John Wick’s assassin universe has immense scope of expansion and The Continental in itself is a playground for scriptwriters. And even when a spin-off series wasn’t part of the original plan, it’s happening now. Director Chad Stahelski has said that the team was approached by the studio after the success of John Wick 2. Stahelski was happy to initiate such a project.
The Unplanned Expansion Of The John Wick Franchise
In fact, Stahelski didn’t even have a second part in mind. But then part two happened and the newfound resurgence of Keanu Reeves opened up new horizons for the project. But now it’s happening and the early prep for The Continental is underway.
Well, what we know till now is that the spin-off will release only after John Wick 4 which is scheduled to hit the theatres in May 2021. This was confirmed by Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch who said that as per the current scheme of things, The Continental is still in the early development phase and will ‘most likely’ come out only after the fourth flick of the John Wick franchise. So that tells us that June 2021 can be the estimated date as per current consensus.
But It’s Not Stamped On Paper Yet!
While we say it won’t happen before that, it might get delayed further. Reports also opine that the date might be a little later i.e. September or October 2021. However, Hirsch made sure that things remain cryptic. He said, “No answer is as good a tease you’re going to get. It’s a great franchise, we’re excited about bringing that show to the network.”
Having noted that, we are yet to get any dirt on the casting. Winston played by Ian McShane will be a part of the spin-off in all probability. Bowery King played by Laurence Fishburne is another whom the odds favour due to the depth the character presents.
First Look Of The Continental
The John Wick spin-off show will venture deeper into the world of assassins. But what has fans buzzing with curiosity is the fact that no violence is allowed inside the walls of The Continental. Hence, the conundrum – will we see why killing was banned in the Continental? Or will we see a more peaceful show in comparison to the movie franchise? Or will we see a wilder environment in The Continental?
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht gives us some clues. He says that The Continental will include “thunderous fight sequences and intensely staged shootouts between professional assassins and their targets”. Furthermore, Albrecht said that the show will introduce more darker stars that will be the core of the underworld that unfolds in The Continental.
The Continental Will Have 3 Seasons, At Least
Stahelski, who is extremely optimistic about the spin-off has noted that there is so much scope for the John Wick spin-off The Continental that content for at least three seasons already exists. A number of storylines will crossover along with characters from the John Wick movies into the TV show. Also, we can be sure to see a number of cameos from Keanu Reeves.
Furthermore, there won’t be any conflicting narratives as the writers will make sure that the TV series is well-aligned with the John Wick movie franchise. More news on the John Wick spin-off is that the trailer is expected to be released in San Diego during the Comic-Con. We shall wait to see if that happens at this year’s event in July.
