Michaela Coel’s HBO series ‘I May Destroy You’ hit it off with the audience earlier this year, which bring us to our question – Is ‘I May Destroy You’ in the line to get a season 2, especially after that finale? Keep reading to find out!
HBO is known for putting some great content out there, especially with their recent hit ‘I May Destroy You‘, which premiered on the network in June this year. The HBO comedy-drama has been created by the talented Michaela Coel who also stars as the lead in the series. ‘I May Destroy You’ made a solid hit with the audiences, and although season 1 seems quite wrapped up in itself, we wonder if I May Destroy You season 2 could stand a chance.

‘I May Destroy You’ scored high
Michaela Coel’s career took a turn in 2012 when her play ‘Chewing Gum Dreams’ made it to the theatres and inspired the 2015 sitcom ‘Chewing Gum’. The series earned her spots in many big and small screen projects, including ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. However, Coel’s biggest break was yet to be realised until this year in June her latest project ‘I May Destroy You’ made its appearance on BBC One and HBO. Set in London, the series follows around a woman, Arabella, who is said to be based on Michaela Coel herself. Initially in the series, Arabella is presented as a writer celebrating her first book release. In a horrible turn of events, Arbella goes through a traumatic experience. Matters turn worse when she finds it difficult to remember the exact details of her circumstances. With time, however, Arabella is able to gradually figure out what’s what.
Michaela Coel stars in the role of Arabella supported by a super-talented cast including the likes of Weruche Opia. Right from its onset, ‘I May Destroy You’ began attracting high critical acclaims and appreciation. For one, Michaela Coel’s representation of Arabella is spick and span, not to mention the razor-sharp script. However, what really wins it for the show is that despite carrying heavy themes and rough social issues, Coel colours it with a sense of humour that is relatable and appealing, no matter which age group you belong to. Such great feedback from the critic and the viewers demand a season 2 for ‘I May Destroy You’ even though the first season seems to have come full circle.
What could happen in ‘I May Destroy You’ Season 2?
Theoretically, the story seems to have come to an end for the HBO comedy-drama. However, if ‘I May Destroy You’ decides to return with season 2, at all, there is a way it could do that. By the end of the first season, we see Arabella finally confronting both Simon and Terry about the traumatic night of her sexual assault. Arabella prepares herself to come to terms with her trauma and decides to move on. In fact, she postpones the deadline of her second book with the intention to work on her bettering her mental health. As for Terry, she achieves some success in her personal as well as her professional lives.
With that, the ending of the first season of ‘I May Destroy You’ seems pretty strong and final, which makes us wonder if a season 2 is at all necessary. Well, if season 2 receives the green light, it could pick up on the lives of the secondary characters. For example, it could address the relationship between Tyrone and Arabella’s friend, Kwame. Moreover, it could focus on the aftermath of Arabella’s mental health journey and the general love and life scenarios of London. Season 2 of ‘I May Destroy You’ could explore a lot of possibilities even if it decided to bring in a news story. The question, however, is if it will!
Is ‘I May Destroy You’ Season 2 on the cards?
No matter how hard we want a season 2 of ‘I May Destroy You’, the cast, including Coel, believe the chances to be pretty slim. The members associated with the show believe that the story is told, the finale is strong, and there are no loose ends to be tied up. Paapa Essiedu, the actor who played Kwame in the series, told “Digital Spy“,
“I think none of us are really thinking about [season 2] right now. This story wasn’t told in order to birth a franchise or to figure out what other iterations of these characters we could find. We were all really sure and comfortable in the story we were telling, and we feel like we’ve done a good job in doing that”.
Michaela Coel hinted at the season finale being pretty final when “The Hollywood Reporter” enquired about plans of continuing the show further. She said, “I don’t want to give anything away. But I think when you see the final episode, you’ll know”.
It’s a shame, but it is what it is! No plans for season 2 of ‘I May Destroy You’ yet. Would you like to see HBO bring out a second season of the show? Let us know in the comments below!
