Is this the end for the juggernaut show? Or will the fans get a spin-off? Let’s take a look!
One of a kind and extremely intense, the Fox show ‘Empire‘ will end with its sixth season. The decision to end the show was stated directly and clearly by the showrunners Terence Howard and Taraji P. Hensen in an interview with a major Hollywood website with the quote: “We are turning the final season into a large TV event, we are trying to go out guns-a-blazing. You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.” ‘Empire’ ran for a total of six seasons from 2015 till 2020 and was one of Fox’s most-watched shows.

In April last year, the lockdown was in full effect all over the world and had completely choked out the filming industry with shows being put on hold or outright cancelled left, right, and centre. It was at that time when showrunners Howard and Jensen decided to give the show an ending and wrap everything up.
What was ‘Empire’ about?
At the centre of the show’s story is the fictional company from which the show derives its name, “Empire Entertainment“. The company was founded by hip-hop kingpin Lucious Lyon, a drug dealer who went from rags to riches using his musical talents. Informed of his eventual and near death due to a medical condition, he decides to groom one of his 3 sons to take over the reins of Empire Entertainment when he passes away. This decision creates major rifts between the 3 brothers: a rapper, an r&b singer, and the firm’s CFO. Things get even more intense as their mother, Cookie Lyon, gets released from prison after a 17-year sentence and joins the fight for Empire’s control.

How did the show end?
The final season begins with Lyon as a wanted fugitive who’s hiding from the fed. Over the course of the next few episodes, the show ties together Empire Entertainment and Lyon’s family affairs. Lucious and Cookie finally forgive each other’s mistakes, reconcile their differences, and come together to build back their broken family. The eldest son Andre reflects on his mistakes as the firm’s leader and decides to go on a Church mission to South Africa and not return back. Hakeem learns to appreciate and love his wife Maya and puts down any plan to leave their marriage. Lucious takes up-and-coming singer Yana under his wings despite her father being his arch-rival. However, her father Damon confuses this to be a romantic relationship and shoots at Lucious with his gun but ends up killing his own daughter Yana.
Can fans expect ‘Empire’ season 7 or is it all over?
Fox entertainment president Michael Thorn had given his word that he is definitely open to a spin-off of the iconic show ‘Empire’. This spin-off would most likely be centred around the Lyon matriarch Cookie and her life struggles. In an interview with a leading Hollywood magazine, he quoted:
“We have talked and continue to talk with the producers about spin-offs all the time, but when you have a show that’s iconic, if we are going to do it, it’s got to be great and hopefully worthy of being in the same sentence as the original.”
There is hope for a possible spin-off but nothing is official as of now. Do you want the show to return? Let us know in the comments section below.
