The espionage-thriller that blew us away
It is not easy for a show to run for 8 long seasons and maintain the standards it set for itself at its commencement. ‘Homeland’ was one such show that managed to continue to pique the interest of its viewers with its superlative performances and unrivalled scriptwriting. The dramatic espionage-thriller chronicled the story of a bipolar CIA officer, the fearless Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and the various covert operations she was a part of to sustain homeland security.
Ever since the final episode was telecasted, fans have been in two minds about the series. Some believe that the way it ended was perfect and fit the feel of the show, while others are unhappy with its openendedness and are of the opinion that there has to be more to it. That said, ‘Homeland’ has undoubtedly managed to intrigue its fans till the very end.
‘Homeland’ Season 9 set to happen soon?
Even though there is no official confirmation regarding this, the makers and actors of the show have made their eagerness to make another season evident in multiple interviews. ‘Homeland’s’ co-creator, Howard Gordon, has gone on record to say, “Never say never”, teasing a possible revival. Gansa too was quoted saying, “As [co-creator Howard Gordon] has said, ‘never say never’. All of us are happy with where we ended the show and the series. Another chapter doesn’t feel necessary at the moment. But who knows what’s going to happen? Who knows what Claire and Mandy want to do? Who knows what Howard wants to do? We don’t know what that looks like. For now, it feels like closure”, indicating that another season is highly probable.
‘Homeland’ Season 9 to potentially start a battle of networks?
Ever since the show began, Showtime has been its home. It was Showtime that saw potential in its pilot and gave it the crucial nod. The executives at the network, after a point, had left most of the key decision-making to the makers of the show allowing them to take their time to produce outstanding content. However, it was Showtime’s decision to cancel the show after a final season 8. So, in the scenario of a season 9, will Showtime be able to retain the series or will it find a new platform on an OTT like Netflix?
Gansa has previously been reported saying that he would surely consider developing a season 9 if a platform such as Netflix made an irrefutable offer, implying his interest in working with the streaming service. Considering how Netflix has emerged as the reigning platform for producing reboots and revivals in the last few years, it unquestionably becomes a strong contender in a possible clash of the networks.
This leaves us with the following question: “Who will emerge victorious – Showtime or Netflix?” At the moment, it is hard to say which way it will go. Nevertheless, taking into account the popularity of ‘Homeland’, both the platforms will certainly do everything in their power to bag its revival. It is not every day that we come across a show that received awesome reviews not just from professional reviewers but also from the public. This is definitely going to be one hell of a clash. So, just sit back and relax because we might get to see one hell of a battle unfold between these networks really soon.
