Fans of the show were worried that following the coronavirus pandemic, the show might not be making a comeback anytime soon. But it is making a comeback with season 2 as was announced in May this year.
Recently, new details about the second season have emerged. Let’s find out what they are!
‘Gentleman Jack’ Season 2 obvious renewal
Starring Suranne Jones, the show is set in 19th century England and is based on an industrialist named Anne Lister. Anne was an openly gay woman in a time when even male homosexuality was criminalized. But the society failed to recognize that women could love as lesbian partners and was also not aware of the existence of such women.
But, Anne Lister’s journals, on which the show bases itself, is living proof that even though the term “lesbians” didn’t exist, countless women like Anne did. The journals Anne kept were full of her feelings, thoughts, and relationships as a gay woman in 19th century England.
BBC confirmed back in May that the second season was in the works after 5.1 million viewers saw the premiere of the show. ‘Gentleman Jack’ Season 1 opened to rave reviews from fans and critics alike, and there was little doubt that the show would be greenlit for season 2.
So, what is Anne up to in season 2?
Season 2 Of ‘Gentleman Jack’ will be bigger and better
Not only is the show coming back for a second season, but BBC also bagged the 9 pm primetime slot for the show, a time that has previously been occupied by big shows like ‘The Night Manager’ and ‘War and Peace’.
The period-drama will return with eight episodes in season 2, all based on the diaries of Anne Lister, just like season 1. The journals of Anne are a remarkable feat in the collection of lesbian history, with a catalogue of more than 5 million words.
It looks like the second season is also on its way to becoming a smashing hit. Sally Wainwright, the writer on the show, recently revealed that the issues it tackles and the strong characters it showcases, deserve nothing but the best. Season 2 will allow the audience to know Anne even better than they did in season 1.
Plot for season 2 of ‘Gentleman Jack’
The second season will focus on the now secretly married-couple Anne and Ann (truly, a match made in heaven). And the global pandemic isn’t putting a halt on season 2’s pre-production. Suranne Jones recently posted a picture of herself on her Instagram handle with the caption that said she is already reading the script for season 2.
Season 1 ended with our protagonist getting the happy ending she deserved as Anne and Ann walk out of the church together, finally married. The real-life Anne and Ann travelled extensively all over Britain post their marriage, so, the next season could extend the location of ‘Gentleman Jack’ well beyond the primary area seen in season 1.
The next season is set to premiere in May 2021, just like season 1 did.
But the question that will carry well into the second season is – will our audacious and radical heroine continue to be fearless in season 2? We still have a year to find that out.
