Its authenticity has earned it applause from not just critics but has even made it a fan favourite over the years. Now, the premium cable channel has announced that the series will be coming to an end with its season 5.
‘Insecure’: Black, bold, beautiful, and brilliant!
The show chronicles the awkward experiences of two contemporary African-American women in their 20s – Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji), who first met at Stanford as students and have been best friends ever since. The girls navigate through life together as people of colour, as they deal with career, friendship, relationship, and other personal struggles. The USP of the show is its handling of the complexities of ‘blackness’ and the reality that we live in a world where people still find it difficult to look beyond race and colour.
The single-camera series has a runtime of 27–41 minute per episode and has become a representative black television programme over the years. With its incredible scriptwriting, dialogues, cinematography, and acting performances, ‘Insecure’ is surely one of the dramedies on TV right now!
Season 5 will end the series!
HBO has announced that the fifth instalment will mark the end of the show. In a recent interview with “Deadline”, Isa Rae expressed her gratitude for the love her show has received. She exclaimed,
“Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end. We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience. I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least”.
The Programming EVP of HBO, Amy Gravitt, has also spoken about how Issa has changed the game for comedies. She expressed that the team of ‘Insecure’ has worked incredibly hard and put their heart and soul into making the show the success that it is. She cited Issa the main reason behind the show’s heartfelt nature and personal touches that make it so relatable.

Insecure has proved to be one of HBO’s most intellectual and enlightening comic ventures in recent times.
Insecure Season 5: What is yet to come?
There are a number of storylines that will be explored in the upcoming season 5. However, Rae has revealed that not much social distancing or the effects of the pandemic will be shown as she doesn’t want the show to look dated while maintaining that she does want to have at least some discussion on the impact of COVID-19 on the black community. Also, continuing the season 4 finale in which Issa and Molly had sat down together for the much-prolonged chat, after weeks of arguments and building tensions, the writers have revealed that their friendship will not return to how it was at the beginning of the series. Even though they have mended their relationship to a certain extent, the girls will be exploring new friendships and taking different paths in the upcoming season.
It is also yet to be seen whether Lawrence and Issa are still together, considering that his ex-girlfriend Condola, is pregnant with his child. Furthermore, what will happen to Nathan and Issa’s relationship? Well, everything will be revealed in season 5! So, take a breather and keep the excitement levels high because the penultimate series will surely blow your mind!
