‘Grey’s Anatomy’ centered itself on Meredith and McDreamy’s dreamy romance, so when DeLuca stepped in to pick up the pieces after his death, fans had a hard time accepting it.
Ellen Pompeo aka Meredith Grey’s love life on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has been quite a tragic one. In the beginning, the Shondaland produced series proposed a complex yet epic romance between two of its most iconic characters. In the end, however, Meredith and fans were both left feeling betrayed of the happily ever after that they deserved. Meredith and McDreamy or should we say Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), had the love of a lifetime! They set some really high relationship goals for us to follow, and even through an extraordinary relationship, they went through a lot of ups and downs together. When they met, she was the young intern and he was the married surgeon, but when they find their way to each other, it becomes a reason for you to watch the show.
Why DeLuca failed to take a step into Derek Shepherd’s shoes on ‘Grey’s Anatomy?
- It’s impossible to replace McDreamy’s charm
- DeLuca is much younger than Meredith is
- The fans had eleven seasons of Derek to compare De Luca with
When Derek was written off from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ through a truly heart-wrenching death, Meredith wasn’t the only one with a broken heart. Fans couldn’t fathom why that had happened and obviously had a tough time accepting it.
Long after Derek died in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 11, Meredith found love again.
It might have not been as perfect as her life with Derek, but it was love after all. The show’s fans, however, were disconcerted by the new love interest who appeared in the form of Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti). Keep reading to find out why DeLuca failed to step in McDreamy’s shoes and woo the fans as Derek once did.
It’s impossible to replace McDreamy’s charm
Derek Shepherd’s good looks and natural charm earned him the moniker of “McDreamy”. The pair was supposed to be just a one-night stand, you know, until they ran into each other at the hospital, on Meredith’s first day of work. She fell head-over-heels in love, as did he, and we had seasons worth grand gestures, sacrifices, and many meet-cutes. The longing glances, the honest proposals, and their post-it note wedding sealed their romance as one of television’s most epic ones.
So, naturally, after witnessing the love of a lifetime unravel on their screens, viewers couldn’t accept his replacement. Derek dies in season 11, devastating Meredith and the millions of viewers experiencing it, and DeLuca didn’t feel like a worthy successor to his character.
DeLuca is much younger than Meredith is
DeLuca is thoughtful and sweet, but he’s also a lot younger than Meredith is, and lacks the maturity she has. Their romance was unexpected and started off abruptly, so even though DeLuca is a good guy, it’s hard for fans to see Meredith with someone else. While age shouldn’t be a factor in deciding how love works, DeLuca is ten years younger than Meredith! He takes care of her kids and lets her be her own person, but that’s never enough. It’s just really hard to fill the shoes of a man who’s been wooing the audience for eleven seasons before you.
Their relationship is a lot healthier than Derek and Meredith’s, doesn’t have many ups and downs, and yet, is not a very believable one. Maybe if fans had seen DeLuca and Meredith spend more time together, or if they met at an earlier point in her life, it would’ve been different.
The fans had eleven seasons of Derek to compare De Luca with
Meredith didn’t lose Derek because of a divorce, she lost him when she was still madly in love with him. His death took an emotional toll on her. So even when she hooked up with DeLuca in an elevator, fans didn’t really feel the flutter of butterflies.
Later on, it began to feel as if Meredith wasn’t fully invested in the relationship, which is somewhat understandable. He was trying to win her over and, in the process, perhaps trying way too hard. Meredith and Derek just clicked, and fans watched them love each other for eleven years, which isn’t a short time!
Meredith and Derek’s relationship might have been rocky and convoluted, but love is love. DeLuca might have been good for her, but their relationship seemed pale in comparison to her life with McDreamy!
