Paramount missed an opportunity and Fox grabbed it by arresting ‘Cops’ for season 33 and beyond on their network.
‘Cops’ started its journey on Fox Network in 1989 and was cancelled amid protests by the civil rights group- “Color for Change”- for being racist. Now, in 2020, the George Floyd protests have marred the future of the long-running reality show on Paramount.

Why did Paramount cancel the TV show ‘Cops’?
“’Cops’ is not on the Paramount network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return”.
With this statement, Paramount pulled the curtains on the police reality show ‘Cops’, which was supposed to air season 33 in June. The cancellation came amidst wide outrage against the police administration and the brutal killing of George Floyd, a Black American, in Minneapolis. America is burning in light of this killing. For this very reason, Paramount decided to do away with the already controversial show ‘Cops’.
In the wake of these protests, many shows like ‘Cops’ have come under public scrutiny for glorifying objectionable police hostility, questionable practices, and racial stereotypes that they follow. Most action-heavy, police procedural dramas like NBC’s ‘Chicago PD’ or CBS’s ‘S.W.A.T’ are criticised for cementing these beliefs.
‘Cops’ had already lost its viewership before these protests. According to Nielsen data, airings of the show in mid-May had 470,000 total viewers per episode, which is less than many more high-profile, basic, cable reality hits.

One can say that Paramount pulled the show from its network for a variety of reasons- lost viewership and constant criticism, etc., and saved their time slot by doing away with the rotten concept. But, have they missed a bright opportunity by shelving ‘Cops’?
Paramount missed an opportunity by cancelling ‘Cops’
Some reports claim that ‘Cops’ is picked up by Fox, the network that cancelled the reality show back in 2013. Fox is seeing an opportunity in renewing ‘Cops’ and becoming the flag bearer of police reforms on TV.

The network thinks that amid these protests, the city police have become extra cautious of their portrayal on TV. A show like ‘Cops’ is the best way to win back the trust of the public in the law enforcement agencies of the government. ‘Cops’ can erase the tainted image of the police and can also teach the police some much-needed lessons. Public scrutiny on the TV show will keep the city police on their toes.
Police can’t afford to lose the trust of the public and will perform better on the reality show. Season 33 of ‘Cops’ will surely get the attention and it may get its lost viewers back. Fox saw an opportunity in the turmoil that Paramount fearfully missed.
Release date updates of ‘Cops’ Season 33 on Fox
Fox will not air season 33 of ‘Cops’ hurriedly, amid the growing protests. In fact, it will allow the makers to soak in all the lessons and come out afresh. Fox will not risk its image by telecasting the reality show now because the mood of the masses is against the heroes of the show.
Season 33 will happen, but it will take some time. The hiatus may be a year-long and we can expect season 33 of ‘Cops’ by May 2021.
