Here’s one of the biggest questions ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 will have to answer – Why didn’t Rue aka Zendaya leave town?
‘Euphoria’ is an HBO teen drama series created by Sam Levinson which premiered in June 2019. The show is loosely based on an Israeli miniseries of the same name, and the life story of its creator. ‘Euphoria’ was praised widely for the honest way in which it dealt with the pressures affecting teenagers.

The series starred Zendaya (Rue Bennett), Hunter Schafer (Jules Vaughn), Jacob Elordi (Nate Jacobs), and Alexa Demie (Maddy). Other regular cast members included Maude Apatow (Lexi), Angus Cloud (Fez O’Neill), and Sydney Sweeney (Cassie) among others.
‘Euphoria’ primarily follows Rue’s life as she navigates through her world after returning from rehab. The show is unafraid of tapping into difficult subjects that take a lot of courage and cautiousness to talk about. And unlike other shows that came before it and tapped into such graphic themes, ‘Euphoria’ does it sensitively.
Zendaya’s performance as a struggling teen addict has earned her praise, and the show has been renewed for another season. Thanks to its high viewership, the second season was announced even before the first one ended! It looks like the showrunners were already prepared to explain the finale’s ambiguous cliffhanger in ‘Euphoria’ Season 2.
Let’s see the plot for ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 and understand what’s going on with Rue!
What is HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ about?
‘Euphoria’ is an unconventional drama that follows a group of high school students and depicts the underbelly of teen life. Anchored by Zendaya, the show deals with dark themes and the ups and downs brought by ones’ teenage years. It talks about young love, relationships, sex, substance abuse, friendships, finding your own identity, violence, and traumatic experiences.
The first season follows Rue, a “lying, drug-addicted, 17-year-old” and the daughter of her loving mother Leslie (Nika King). The story begins when she returns from rehab and, soon, the viewer sees her struggle with her self-identity and OCD.
You see her budding romance with Jules and the repercussions of substance abuse in her life. There are other story angles that unravel with regards to other characters, dealing with anger issues and major life-altering events.
The series not only accurately depicts the before and after of ‘the high’, but also how it destroys relationships. Zendaya’s performance as Rue is hard-hitting and one of a kind. ‘Euphoria’ doesn’t sensationalise drugs, and instead shows the harsh reality of it that teenagers are facing today.
Season 2 to reveal why Rue didn’t leave town and more
The first 8 episodes of the series is a journey of the viewer trying to comprehend Rue’s harsh lifestyle. And then comes the finale, which is definitely up for competition with some of the most shocking ones we’ve seen! ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 is sure to be a roller-coaster ride and will explain the surprising ending of the first season.
There are some characters’ storylines that we can definitely see developing a lot more in the future to come. At the end of the first season, viewers see Nate have a breakdown, and Cassie making a difficult decision. And Rue refuses to leave town with Jules and the final moments indicate that Rue could’ve possibly overdosed and … died?
Rue’s death can’t be a possibility yet, because her character is the narrator and, obviously, the most important one. It’s also heartbreaking to watch her struggle, just to see her and Jules’ relationship make her lose control again. ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 will probably explain what happened to Rue and why she suddenly decided not to leave town. We’ll have to wait to see whether she’ll finally overcome her addiction and turn it all around.
‘Euphoria’ Season 2 release date?
Although a second season was confirmed by HBO, there’s been no official release date yet. Production delays have been caused due to the pandemic, while HBO previously announced that season 2 would release in 2020.
The good thing is that Zendaya isn’t going anywhere, and production has probably started. Earlier this year, ‘Euphoria‘s’ official Twitter account shared a photo of Zendaya at what looks like a table read! If this isn’t obvious she’s onboard, we don’t know what is! It also seems like the scripts are ready, so all the cast needs to do is get together and shoot.
Sydney Sweeney (Cassie) also teased the names of the characters that would return in ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 on Instagram. Looks like everyone in this video is excited about a brand new season! And earlier this month, Zendaya finally gave an update for the new season, in conversation with “Teen Vogue”. The star mentioned that the team behind the show is getting ready to give the fans something special soon!
She said, “There is an idea to do a couple of bridge episodes that can be shot safely but aren’t necessarily part of season 2. So hopefully, we will be able to do those in the coming months. I can’t wait”. Only if she knew that we can’t wait either!
Well, we can’t wait! Which storyline are you most excited to see more of in ‘Euphoria’ Season 2? Let us know in the comments.
