The makers of Doctor Who muddled things up when they introduced a new female character in the eleventh season of the show. What made them drop such a twist?
From what we can gather from the second half of Doctor Who’s Episode 2 i.e Spyfall, there is no going back even if we had a (time machine) TARDIS! However, only a few could have guessed that the twelfth season would change the course of the show in a more rudimentary way.
And it has everything to do with The Master’s words, “Everything you think you know is a lie.”
- ‘Everything you think you know is a lie’ mystery explained
- The truth behind the Timeless Child revealed
- The biggest twist in the show discussed
Unraveling the mystery
Previously, these mind-bending words made us re-think if the twist was linked to The Timeless Child mystery. However, Sunday’s episode (5th Jan) has confirmed it to be true in more dramatic ways than can be predicted.
The real bomb drops towards the end of part two of Doctor Who Episode 2 Spyfall. It’s when The Master reveals that the (planet) Gallifrey has been pulverised, burnt down and nuked. In a sense of urgency, the Doctor gains access to her TARDIS to re-visit her planet and see if the Master’s words held any truth. To her dismay, it did. And now, her planet is ablaze.
Shattered to the core of her heart, the Doctor is then interrupted by a hologram message from her arch-nemesis, the Master.
The cruel Master divulges into the fact that he was the one who sabotaged the Time Lords. He further adds that he had to take his revenge for what he had “discovered”. The Master claims that the founding fathers of Gallifrey have lied to both, him and the Doctor.
“Everything we were told is a lie. We are not who we think, you or I.” – The Master
The Timeless Child
The details of the Doctor’s past and her time on Gallifrey are still wrapped in mystery. Evidently, the message leaves her shaken and also… the fans watching the drama unfold back at home.
But there’s more. The Master spills the beans and reveals that their whole existence and species was a ‘lie’ based on The Timeless Child.
As the Master breaks these words down, the Doctor has recaps to a time when clairvoyant monsters or The Remnants first creeped her out with a mention of The Timeless Child.
The Remnants had mentioned ‘the Child’ as something hidden, even from her. The Master then conjugates that idea in this situation. He tells her that the mystery had been buried in the Doctor’s subconscious mind all along.
Nonetheless, The Master could have revealed more information on The Timeless Child mystery but he stops there. The Master being the wicked one finishes off by saying that he could have said more but it isn’t for him to find out. After all, why should he make it easier for the Doctor?
The Big Twist In The Show Ahead
Particularly, showrunner Chris Chibnall has now made The Timeless Child’s concept the core of the show.
But the question remains — Who is The Timeless Child, after all? There is a possibility that it could be one of the two remaining Time Lords. Alas! Who knows?
With every other member of her planet now dead, it will be interesting to watch how The Doctor seeks an answer to the questions that surround her.
Now that we know that the Doctor realizes that everything she’s ever been told was a lie, it directly implies that everything we were ever told too, were a bunch of lies. This changes the track of the show and everything we thought we knew about the Doctor.
