Fans were hooked when the BBC crime thriller ‘The Fall’ arrived on Netflix, but people were divided about the ending.
The series follows Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) on her quest to stop a serial killer who has been causing terror. Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan (of ‘50 Shades of Grey’ fame), has proved far from easy to stop. Here’s how season 3 ends and what people thought of the shocking ending.

What happens in the last episode of ‘The Fall’ Season 3?
Paul Spector has abused and killed a number of women. DS Stella Gibson has been chasing him since the start of her mission but her attempts to reach justice have not been successful so far.
Many fans who missed the final episode of series three, “Their Solitary Way”, want to know if the finale was the one where she manages to capture him.
In the last episode of season 3 of ‘The Fall’, Spector is questioned about the death of Susan Harper, which happened some time back. In a lengthy interrogation at the start of the episode, Paul is reminded of his crimes.
Spector confesses to the officer that he, Harper, and David Alvarez had gone out to a bar before going back to Harper’s house. He is claiming that she died during a consensual “sex game” that went wrong.
DS Gibson, also in the interrogation room, initially sitting calmly and quietly, eventually tells Spector to speak up about the abuse he apparently suffered as a boy. She is seen claiming that Alvarez took the blame for Spector because Spector had protected him from also being abused in his youth.
She asks Spector to “drop the charade” and tells him that she wants him to be “punished” for crimes he had committed. These words of her will prove significant as the episode continues. At the end of the scene, she also tells him that death would be “too easy an escape” for him.
She tells him to stop pretending he had lost his memory.
When the series took a violent turn
Just when the officers get up to leave, the scene takes a shocking turn.
Spector violently lunges at DS Gibson. He starts beating her severely until she is bleeding. The attack continues until two security guards grab him and drag him out of the room. Stella ends up in a hospital.
Spector goes on to attack two other characters at the clinic where he is undergoing psychiatric assessment – a clinician and a patient.
In another scene, a teen girl Katie (Aisling Franciosi) has been self-harming. She had been enamoured with Spector. He had convinced her to assault a friend, which ended up with Katie landing in a juvenile detention centre.
In an emotional discussion, DS Gibson tells Katie that she needs to stop obsessing over Spector.
Was Paul Spector punished in the end?
None of the characters in ‘The Fall’ gets a happy ending, neither Spector, DS Gibson, nor for anyone else for that matter.
Spector, in this complex situation, takes a shocking step and kills himself.
He does so in a manner similar to that in which he claimed Susan Harper had died.
DS Gibson is left looking devastated with tears in her eyes when she gets the news of his death. She is visibly sad because of the fact that he had evaded justice or any form of punishment for his crimes.
The episode gave the viewers and Stella Gibson a rather unsatisfying end to the case she had dedicated so much time to.
Fans divided at the ending
Though the show was never designed to have a fairy tale ending, people were expecting that justice will be delivered in the end.
People have been sharing their views on social media. One Twitter user was so furious that he wrote,
“While seasons one and two had been blinding, he felt “ripped off” after watching season three”.
Many others felt “cheated” or “disappointed” when the writers of the show chose to give Spector an easy death.
