Is Netflix set to bring back its German science fiction series, ‘Dark’, for season 4?
‘Dark’ was the first German-language series created by Netflix. It was a success from the first day it was released and trended at number one on Netflix in 2017. - Is Netflix producing a Dark season 4?
Created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, ‘Dark’ had 3 seasons and ended in June 2020. The series has been lauded by critics and fans who were left awestruck after watching it and wished that this suspenseful ride would continue for longer. So, has Netflix finally caved in to the demand and decided to revive the series for a fourth season?
‘Dark’: A mystery thriller with time travel
Set in Winden, ‘Dark’ is an obfuscating paradox that begins with the disappearance of a child and heads towards revealing a strange connection between four families. Honestly, the series is difficult to explain, but during its 3 seasons, it shows years ranging between 1888 and 2053 and various characters travelling and existing in different timelines.
‘Dark’ is often referred to as the ‘Stranger Things’ for adults and is not an easy series to understand. However, by the end of the series, everything falls into place. The riveting screenplay of ‘Dark’ is complemented by its soundtrack which is evocatively beautiful. The more you watch it the more revelations will come your way and the more you’ll anticipate what is to come.

The series doesn’t disappoint with its cast and stars Louis Hofmann, Andreas Pietschmann, Dietrich Hollinderbäumer, Daan Lennard Liebrenz, Maja Schöne, Lisa Vicari, Oliver Masucci, Jördis Triebel, and Gina Alice Stiebitz, amongst many others, all of whom deliver stellar performances.
The unanticipated popularity of ‘Dark’
The series has been, time and again, praised for its genius story and the showrunners explained the process much to the delight of fans worldwide, “That’s where we basically put the groundwork, going for deterministic time travel rules. We’re hinting at that in the first season all the time that it’s a circle. Everything happens constantly in loops. I just felt that was such a multilayered story. I put a lot of thought into it: What kind of information and when do you explain certain rules? How much room do you give for people trying to figure it out and when do you push them into the right direction? What kind of trigger words do you use? What kind of symbols do you use? There are a lot of symbols throughout, a lot of referencing systems in terms of religion, mythology”.
Surprisingly, almost 90% of the audience of this series is non-German. Addressing the show’s success, creator Friese said, “It’s something you hope for, but it actually hit us really hard. Two weeks after the release of season 1, I was on Twitter honestly 24 hours a day. I was so miserable because … somehow you’re really more prepared for failure than success, I guess. It was a very, very odd time, but also great to know the fans just embraced what you’ve done so much. It’s heart-wrenching and really put a lot of press pressure on season 2. For two or four weeks I was completely lost to the world”.
Is Netflix producing a season 4?
It doesn’t seem likely. Even though Netflix did not cancel the series, the makers of the show decided to end it at season 3 as a creative decision. They wanted to end the show on a high note and did exactly that. Odar took to his Instagram to convey gratitude for the success of the series.
Though there is a possibility that Netflix may create a spin-off of the show in times to come. The series was brilliantly made and another collaboration between the OTT platform and showrunners may not be that far-fetched an idea. Only time will tell how executives at Netflix will proceed. All we can do is hope for the very best.
