‘Cobra Kai’ has managed to transform Johnny and Miguel into the new Daniel-san and Mr Miyagi teacher-student duo!
The martial arts comedy-drama streaming series is based on Robert Mark Kamen’s original ‘Karate Kid’ films. Created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg for Netflix, the series stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. The actors reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the original 1984 film, but the series is set 34 years later!

- Johnny and Miguel to return in ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 4?
‘Cobra Kai’ re-examines the narrative of “Miyagi Verse” from Johnny’s perspective and follows his decision to reopen the karate dojo. Unexpectedly, his rivalry with Daniel from decades before also rekindles until they set aside their differences in season 3.
Fans have often compared the relationship between Johnny and Miguel to have been similar to Daniel-san and Mr Miyagi. Keep reading to see just how much that is true!
Mr Miyagi and Daniel-san had a special best bond
In the 1984 film franchise, Mr Miyagi and Daniel-san (not son, it’s a Japanese honorific) had a bond of their own. Pat Morita’s exceptional portrayal of the Karate master made everyone wish we had a sensei like him. Daniel LaRusso too was a great student, and never stopped showing gratitude towards his mentor even years later.
Mr Miyagi introduced Daniel to a new world, one that included karate, bonsai trees, and waxing cars. Without his mentor, Daniel knew he didn’t stand a chance against his bullies. In the future, he integrated his former sensei’s teachings into his dojo and honoured his legacy.
The father-son relationship we saw in the films solidified their status as one of the best duos we’ve seen before. The “wax on” and “wax off” technique, learning crane kicks and catching flies with chopsticks, were lessons Daniel would never forget. Even after Mr Miyagi passed away in 2011, we’re sure he’d be proud of Daniel for all he had accomplished. He wasn’t a part of his student’s life anymore but his memories lived on forever.
Johnny and Miguel are the new Mr Miyagi and Daniel
The ‘Cobra Kai’ writers were able to understand why the film franchise was successful and became a classic. We already had the chance to see Daniel and Mr Miyagi take the stage, so now it was Johnny’s turn. The series ingeniously brought Johnny and Miguel’s story to life by making them the central characters. Daniel is a co-lead, but it’s Johnny’s time now, something the series made clear time and time again.
Daniel was a success, he had achieved great things in life and yet was unable to remain uninfluenced by Johnny. It’s important to mention his so-called rival was a complete loser now, but Daniel just couldn’t see him turn his life around. By restarting Cobra Kai, Johnny and Miguel’s story transformed into a modern-day Miyagi and Daniel. Even though Miyagi-Do dojo threatened Cobra Kai, Johnny and Miguel stuck together.
They had several special moments which made the show worthwhile. There was mentorship, mutual respect between a teacher and student who had each other’s back. A brilliant inversion of the original story, ‘Cobra Kai’ followed a new generation of a student-teacher relationship which enamoured audiences.
Johnny and Miguel to return in ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 4?
‘Cobra Kai’ enjoyed its status as a true hidden gem before Netflix subscribers found out all about it. The series was originally a Youtube Premium, kitschy-sounding reboot which was cancelled after season 2. Not only did Netflix discover the series and add it to the streaming service, but also renewed it for a third. And a fourth.
The martial arts drama show’s third season premiered earlier this month and achieved great success. It was only fair for a fourth to return and bring back Johnny and Miguel, everyone’s favourite iconic duo. And it’s happening! Although season 4 could be delayed for a bit, we can expect it to begin filming soon.
In an interview with “PopCulture.com”, ‘Cobra Kai’ co-creator Josh Heald confirmed season 4 would be made this year itself.
“COVID has thrown a wrench into everyone’s plans for exactly when production begins”,
“But our expectation is in early 2021, we will be in production. We are just keeping our heads down and making sure that the story makes sense and the scripts are solid and getting our ducks in a row so the moment that everything looks good, we can begin.”
