Will the fans get to see the adult animated show, revived as a movie, soon?
‘Bojack Horseman’ is Netflix’s satirical, adult animation that went on for 6 seasons. This emotional rollercoaster of a show has been hailed as one of the best shows of all time by the critics. The show gained widespread popularity amongst viewers for its realistic take on “existential crisis” and “mental health issues”. As the series finally concluded in 2020, it left fans wanting more. So, is ‘Bojack Horseman’ set to return in a movie reboot? Here are the details.
- ‘Bojack Horseman’ back in a movie reboot?
- ‘Bojack Horseman’– Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s amusing take on an existential crisis
- ‘Bojack Horseman’ – 6 seasons of genius adult animation
Adult-animation was never my thing, but all that changed when I came across Netflix’s Black comedy-satire, ‘Bojack Horseman’. Hailed as one of the best adult animations of all time, ‘Bojack Horseman’ gave us 6 seasons of sheer genius between 2014 and 2020. Comedian Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s brainchild has a never seen before take on “existential crisis” which is hilarious and painful all at once. The award-winning surreal comedy has been widely praised for its appropriate representation of mental health problems, racism, sexism, and sexuality amongst other sensitive topics.
The most unconventional premise
The series revolves around its titular character, ‘Bojack Horseman’ who is a washed-up 90s’ celebrity living in a world where human beings and anthropomorphic animals live together. To make a comeback, he decides to write a revealing autobiography with the help of a human ghost-writer, Diane Nguyen. The series follows his life, his addictions, and his mental health issues as well as relationships with those around him. Horseman himself, while describing his life, is shown saying in an episode, “I feel like my life is just a series of unrelated wacky adventures”.
Despite its bizarre premise, before you know it, this dark comedy has you swimming in a pool of emotions. The show’s main character is loosely based on its creator, Bob-Waksberg, making the story intriguingly relevant and realistic. The series is dark, unorthodox, and stays with you for a long time.
The show is known for ‘keeping it real’ even with its meaningful dialogues. Its has given us some of the most relatable quotes in recent times, including the one that perfectly encapsulates the series – “No one watches the show to feel feelings. Life is depressing enough already”. True story!
After some initial confusion, the series was finally cancelled by Netflix at the end of its 6th season, disappointing fans worldwide. But can we expect to see more of these iconic characters in the near future? Here is what we know.
Is a movie reboot in the works?
‘Bojack Horseman’ had a two-part season 6 to ensure that the makers gave it the ending it deserved. Episode 16, which served as the final episode, proved to be a fulfilling watch for the viewers.
The last episode saw Horseman surviving a near-death experience, and though still in jail, determined to get back on the horse (no pun intended) and live a much better life. Other characters too saw significant developments in their lives – his lovable friend, Todd, moved in with his girlfriend, whereas Nguyen got married to Guy and Horseman’s ex-girlfriend Princess Carolyn to Judah. It was quite a well-written, sensible, and satisfying conclusion.
So, now that the show has come to an end, is a reboot movie in the making? As of now, no. However, I would not be surprised if we get to see a revival or a movie reboot of this perspicacious series soon. The movie can focus on new storylines apart from further shedding some light on these newly married couples and showing Horseman living a happier life. And since reboots and revivals are becoming a fast-growing trend, a new project might be exceedingly possible in the coming years.
So, even though season 6 gave fans ample closure, as they bid adieu to their favourite show, in Horseman’s own words, “Closure is a made-up thing by Steven Spielberg to sell movie tickets. It, like true love and the Munich Olympics, doesn’t exist in the real world”. Now, this makes hopeful fans wonder if this is not essentially the end for the series.
