Who is Billie Eilish; decoding the mammoth popularity
Born in Los Angeles, Billie is half Scottish half Irish. The singer started to gain attention in 2016 with the release of her song ‘Ocean Eyes’ on SoundCloud. Most of her songs are written and produced in collaboration with her brother Finneas.
Billie Eilish’s debut EP (extended play) ‘Don’t smile at me’ went on to reaching the top 15 in UK, US, Canada and Australia.
After this, Billie launched her debut studio album ‘When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ in 2019. That went on to becoming the best-performing album of the year 2019 in the United States. Not just that, it also went on to gaining the top spot in the UK.
Apart from sweeping away five Grammys; the singer has also won three MTV Video Music Awards and two AMAs (American Music Award). In addition, the ‘Xanny’ singer also has two Guinness World Records set to her name. The buck doesn’t stop there, the American weekly news magazine TIME had placed Billie on their inaugural TIME 100 NEXT list in 2019.
Social media fan-following and style explained
‘Wish You Were Gay’ singer boasts off a whopping 54.3 million fans on Instagram and 3.7 million followers on Twitter. Billie has a tad tomboyish persona. She loves wearing chains, big sneakers and baggy clothes. However, she still has hots for subtle glowy makeup and dyeing her hair to purple, silver and green making her look still very feminine.
Owing to her iconic style, today Eilish is not only a global singer but carved her way as an independent ‘brand’. The singer’s Instagram account is the testament to her evolution and style – with each upload her clothes get baggier and her smile seems to fade away. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Eilish has an angelic voice with a melancholy undertone. She’s also introduced a new genre of pop with her songs called ‘Alternative pop’ which is a subculture of Indie pop.
Having achieved such a colossal feat at a mere age of 18 is extraordinary. And Billie Eilish’s new documentary on Apple TV+ delves into the exact subject matter and cracks the star’s unprecedented success.
