Highlights
- Anything but normal
- Marianne and Connell’s love tears you apart in season 1
- Season 2 is possible
Well, the story isn’t over until the audience says it is. Here is everything we know about Normal People season 2.
The show is anything but normal
The show, based on Sally Rooney’s book by the same name, is a class-struggle enveloped in a teen romance, which grows into a lot more. If the beautiful soundtrack doesn’t clue you in, you only need a few seconds in the presence of Marianne (Daisy Edgar Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal) to understand that their electrifying chemistry isn’t something easily found on screen anymore.
The twelve-part series makes it clear from the first between Marianne and Connell, that young lust is important in the show.
The melancholic show is beyond the emotions. It is also about the necessary and heart-wrenching process of breaking yourself down in order to grow up.
Marianne and Connell’s love tears you apart
Set in Ireland in the early 2010s, Normal People tells the story of two school-mates: Marianne, who comes from money, and Connell, whose mother cleans the house for Marianne’s family. While Connell is the confident, beautiful, and athletic kind, Marianne is the outcast — bookish and snarky.

With nothing in common on the surface, they both share an instant attraction towards each other, which they later realise is much deeper than just a physical bond. While in most teen romances, sex itself is either the answer or the end, in Normal People, it is the beginning of truly getting to know someone.
We watch them through the years together, struggle with everything from Marianne’s family being violently unloving towards her or Connell’s problems with money and depression until in each other they find the strength to grow.

Season 2 is possible
As Marianne and Connell move on from the small town to Trinity College in Dublin, their love changes with them. Somewhere between being friends to secret lovers and being friends with benefits, they both grow up. The twelve-hour journey ends with Connell deciding to move to New York to pursue a creative writing course.
The outcry for Connell and Marianne to continue their journey for a second season has been nothing short of deafening.
Daisy Edgar Jones and Paul Mescall, recently on an Instagram live, talk about their characters returning for a second season. While it is not on the cards at present, Mescall stated that it is something he would love to come back to.
Jones said, while the story does seem finished in a way, there is still so much mystery around where they both end up. So, even though there is no guarantee of the show returning, there is comfort in knowing that the possibility isn’t completely ruled out.
