After a cliffhanger in the Season 8 finale, Homeland fans are eager to know if there will be more. But all they got was a tease from the creators of the show. So, are we looking at a possible ninth season?
We sat glued to our screens for what turned out to be an open-ended finale of Homeland season 8 in May 2020.
- Homeland: A treat for the heart and mind
- Hopes for another season or a movie: Will Netflix pick it up?
- A fitting finale for season 8 keeps speculation about another season going strong
Fans were left salivating for more, and why not? The show seems to have left enough cues to pick up from. Things looked up when the show’s creators, Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, teased fan’s about a possible reboot. We are listening!
A game changer that is Homeland
The riveting spy and political thriller created by Gordon and Gansa began in 2011 and picked up pace with every season. With exciting twists and constant cliffhangers, Homeland soon became a show known to keep people on their toes. The show aired on Showtime, Channel 4 as well as on streaming platforms Hulu and Prime Video.
However, it seems like the creators now have other plans for the ninth season — Netflix could become the new streaming partner.
In its nine-year span, the show has won at least 12 awards, the most prominent being a Golden Globe and an Emmy for the Outstanding Drama Series. And that’s not all.
Carrie Mathison also managed to bag the Outstanding Lead Actress award twice for her role of Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin won the Outstanding Supporting Actor for the role of Saul Berenson, and Damian Lewis won Outstanding Lead Actor for the role of Nicholas Brody.
All eyes on Netflix
So where do we go from here? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Alex Gansa shed some light on this. When asked if there was a possibility of revisiting the characters in the future if Netflix backed up the money truck for a Homeland movie,
He replied, “As Howard has said, ‘never say never’. All of us are happy with where we ended the show and the series. Another chapter doesn’t feel necessary at the moment. But who knows what’s going to happen. Who knows what Claire and Mandy want to do? Who knows what Howard wants to do? We don’t know what that looks like.”
Does that leave us hanging? By the looks of it, Netflix is now every Homeland fan’s hope.
We deserve another season, don’t we?
If you haven’t seen Season 8, we ask you to not read this section because — spoiler alert!
The finale was initially set to involve a pivotal scene with Carrie and Franny. But Alex Gansa explained in an interview that it did not happen for two reasons. Firstly, their lack of budget, and secondly, being lead actress, “Claire felt very strongly that Carrie had made the decision to leave Franny behind in Season 7”.
That explains the different ending. The finale also saw Carrie Mathison acting as a double agent and try to kill her mentor Saul Berenson, all so she could become his new informant in Russia.
There is no telling what season 9 could hold for us. Would it perhaps even a way to bring Peter Quinn or Max back? Only time will tell. In the meantime, here’s us praying that Netflix seals the deal for Season 9 of Homeland.
