‘Mindhunter’: Should we binge it or not?
Netflix original series ‘Mindhunter’ can easily be called the most engrossing serial crime drama. It has everything that a crime thriller must have: the psychological aspect as well as the in-depth process of figuring out the motives and machinations behind the grisly murders.
‘Mindhunter’ is set in the seventies when the world hadn’t even defined the term “serial killers”. Special agent Holden Ford (played by Jonathan Groff) is an intrepid rookie investigator who is drawn into the minds of the men who have committed heinous murders.
Holden sets up interviews with notorious convicts in prison. He brings his psychoanalytical findings back to the FBI and teams up with special agent Bill Tench (played by Holt McCallany), who founded the FBI Behavioural Science Unit.
Agents Ford and Tench, together solve a series of gruesome and depraved crimes, laying the foundation for behavioural forensics in the FBI. Every question regarding serial killers that often make us scratch our not-so-mighty heads is asked and answered: Why would a killer decapitate his victims before sodomizing them? Why would a man masturbate using women’s shoes? Why would he throw a cloth over their bodies afterwards?
The show is a loose adaptation of the book of the same name by John E. Douglas. While Ford and Tench are fictional, the killers in ‘Mindhunter’ are real criminals. Coed Killer, Jerry Brudos, the Shoe Fetish Slayer, and Charles Manson were some of the gruesome killers that no one bothered to understand at that time. We can safely say that ‘Mindhunter’ is the best series on Netflix in this genre. If you love serial killer dramas, you can’t ignore the beautifully dark series.
Why season 3 of ‘Mindhunter’ has become the talk of the town?
The second season of ‘Mindhunter’ came last August, two years after the first season hit the platform. Netflix audiences are eager for the third instalment of the series and are pitching up for an early release of season 3.
‘Mindhunter’ in two of its seasons has begun to open up the narrative that a possible season 3 can only carry forward. The cliffhanger ending in season 2 leaves us aching for season 3.
Some section of the TV media is saying that season 3 of ‘Mindhunter’ is actually in the works, secretly! It is David Fincher’s idea to build the suspense, which matches the mood of the series. Some of the fans are already celebrating without knowing the details. Let’s find out if the news stories circling in social media is true or not.
Truth or Myth- ‘Mindhunter’ Season 3 in the works
We have heard that the main cast was relieved of their contracts to allow them to find new work. Later, the spokesperson of Netflix clarified that David Fincher is busy with other projects. But, he might revisit the series in the future.
Recently, we got an update from the cinematographer of season 2- Erik Messerschmidt. He said that he has no idea whether the third season of ‘Mindhunter’ will happen or not although he has kept the hopes on.
While talking to “Collider”, he said, “I’ve heard things are on hold for a little bit. We’ll see. Who knows? But it would be an honour to go back … I love working with David and adore the cast and the crew, and it’s been an incredible period of my life for certain”.
He added, “I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work on it and contribute to it. It’s been particularly important and poignant in my career. But yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on”. The statements prove that ‘Mindhunter’ hasn’t begun filming season 3. But, all is not so gloomy and doomy for the future of the show. The “Hollywood Reporter” once reported that Fincher had five seasons of the series mapped out.
It is now clear that the third season of ‘Mindhunter’ is not happening shortly although the show is not cancelled. We can expect the third segment of ‘Mindhunter’ to come hunting down the minds of serial killers by late 2022, at the earliest.
