American spy thriller ‘Homeland’ blew away everyone from Barrack Obama to Hillary Clinton, but while no one was noticing, the show went wrong not once but many times. Here’re 5 ‘Homeland’ mistakes everyone missed!
American spy thriller ‘Homeland’ won over billions of people’s hearts since its release back in 2011, with an exceptionally gripping plot that keeps you on the edge, the chemistry between protagonist Carrie and Nicholas Brody, and life-like adventure SFX.
- Brody prays namaz while the Sun is rising
- Character name gone for a toss
- The questionable relation between Brody and Carrie
- One of the biggest bloopers of all time in ‘Homeland’
And recently, on April 26th, 2020, the 9-year journey with 8 seasons and 72 episodes came to an end. While the showrunners, Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon, have done a fabulous job keeping the show as real-like as possible, there are many occasions when ‘Homeland’ went wrong without anyone noticing. Here’re 5 ‘Homeland’ mistakes.
In Season 1, Brody prays namaz while the Sun is rising
Well, a big mistake there. In Islam, the first namaz of the day or the Morning Prayer is called Fajr namaz, and it is done before sunrise. And, the next namaz is prayed at high noon (known as Zhuhr).
So, maybe the mistake was a result of the lights used in the shoot or due to the lack of research, we’d never know. But oops! The showrunners should have had their facts checked.
Character name gone for a toss
Do you remember Afsal Hamid, one of Nicholas Brody’s guards when he was a captive? This is where you can find a glaring mistake. He, allegedly, is a Syrian terrorist. In Syria, the national language is Arabic. In the name Afsal, the pronunciation of Afsal pronounced as Afzal, with pressure on Z. And in native Syrian Arabic, there is no use of Z, so the name should have been Afdal with pressure on ‘D’. Afsal pronounced as ‘Afzal’ is commonly used in Farsi language, which is the national language of Iran. Therefore, we can easily conclude the glaring mistake on deep research on cultural differences.
In Season 1, Carrie mistakes hijab, the headscarf, with burka
Throughout the first season of ‘Homeland’, the protagonist calls the hijab a burka. It comes as a surprise because Carrie was deployed in the Middle-East for her service earlier, and continues to make this mistake.
The relationship between Brody and Carrie – Is it even ethical?
The personal relationship between Brody and Carrie has been one of the many reasons fans remained hooked to ‘Homeland’. But even though this has always been an on and off type of relationship, it sure violates the regulation of fraternization within the military setup.
One of the biggest bloopers of all time in ‘Homeland’
It is the fundamental rule of cinematography that a scene, no matter how emotional and gut-wrenching it is, must not reveal the camera and the crew working behind the scene to its viewers. It is the director’s job to ensure this.
That went to toss when an episode of ‘Homeland’, in which a Saudi diplomat was being interviewed in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows in broad daylight, one can easily see the camera crew’s reflection through his eyeglasses. Oops!
So you see, most of these mistakes are cultural. And that makes the lack of deep research on cultural aspect more evident. Have you noticed these ‘Homeland’ mistakes? No?
