Here are three major reasons why ‘Black Sails’ Season 5 must set sail for its course before it is too late.
If you haven’t seen the show yet, ‘Black Sails’ is a brilliant prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel ‘Treasure Island’. Although the Scottish author’s tale tells the story of “buccaneers and buried gold”, the series explores its iconic characters without having any connection to the book itself.
- The ending didn’t necessarily set the pace for ‘Treasure Island’
- We need more of Toby Stephens as Captain Flint
- ‘Black Sails’ Season 5 is perfect for the era of reboots and reunions!
The incredible thing is that ‘Treasure Island’ fans will not be disappointed. ‘Black Sails’ does tremendous justice to Captain Flint and paints a stunning visual of the Golden Age of pirates. Beginning in 1715, ‘Black Sails’ follows Captain Flint as he fights for New Providence Island’s survival.
The pirate adventure show centres on the tales of Captain Flint who has quite the reputation of being the most brilliant and feared pirate of all time. In the wake of threats from British and Spanish forces, Flint struggles to save the paradise of pirates, thieves, and fortune seekers. On his hunt for the prize which would safeguard the interests of his people, Flint experiences challenges unlike ever before.
Creators Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg made exquisite use of the book’s characters and presented them very originally. It gave fans a yearning for fantastic pirate adventures in possibly one of the best pirate-centric television shows in history. The series was cancelled after the fourth season, but fans haven’t forgotten about it.
Here are three reasons why ‘Black Sails’ Season 5 needs to happen!
The ending didn’t necessarily set the pace for ‘Treasure Island’
There was a real, justifiable reason behind the creator’s decision to call ‘Black Sails’ a ‘Treasure Island’ prequel series. Often, the inclusion of the novel’s characters has been stated as the reason since it had no connection to the book. A statement citing that it’s a prequel holds weight, and ‘Black Sails’ Season 5 is crucial because of the following reason.
‘Treasure Island’ fans expected to see what happened to Flint’s treasure at the end since he was the only one who knew of its whereabouts. All that is covered in the show but there was never any map drawn by Flint for the treasure, unlike the books.
Why did Silver and Rackham (who were both aggressive about their share) lose interest in the treasure? How could they leave it in the ground there when the finale was expected to tie into ‘Treasure Island’? There was never any clarity offered by the writers and it confuses fans to this day on. ‘Black Sails’ Season 5 would bring the series more time to depict what actually happened and solve this mystery.
We need more of Toby Stephens as Captain Flint
Toby Stephens’ emotionally nuanced portrayal of Captain Flint is reason enough to watch the show. His incredible journey from a young, idealistic lieutenant in the Royal Navy to a commanding pirate leader is timeless.
Stephens had a tough job at hand already because Flint certainly isn’t easy to play. To top that, bringing justice to a character that has lived in the pages of a novel for over 100 years is impossibly hard.
Flint was a lost pirate and Stephens depicted his life with pride, even at Flint’s murderous best. He was able to create an emotional connect with every viewer simply because he was experiencing Flint’s life. A performance like that isn’t easy to forget and deserves a lot more applause. It’s been four years since the series concluded and it’s now the perfect time to bring back ‘Black Sails’ Season 5.
‘Black Sails’ Season 5 is perfect for the era of reboots and reunions!
It is true that fans of ‘Black Sails’ would love to see where their beloved characters are today. Embarking on a new journey with them would be the ideal way to see the origin of ‘Treasure Island’ come to life. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any reports for ‘Black Sails’ Season 5 to go into production anytime soon.
The lack of pirate-based shows on streaming services right now make it a great time to renew it. Creators Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg subverted all expectations of television shows work and constantly raised the bar. They concluded the series with the utmost respect for the characters, but it obviously wasn’t enough for viewers longing for more.
The series slowly made its way towards its conclusion and was laser-focused on giving it a rightful end. There were some inaccuracies which confused viewers, but seeing Captain Flint’s journey come to a mesmerizing halt was fulfilling.
The treasure was always kept in place, ‘Treasure Island’ references made more and more appearances, and its characters never disappointed. ‘Black Sails’ and ‘Treasure Island’ was a perfect marriage which balanced its characters with the novel’s inspirations. It’s all the more reason to bring that to life once again in ‘Black Sails’ Season 5.
