The Black Widow movie will officially kick start Marvel’s Phase 4 in May 2020. The second trailer of the anticipated movie dropped some major hints about what actually happened in Budapest, the insides of the infamous Red Room and the other Black Widow Yelena Belova.
The trailer shows Black Widow (Natasha Romanov) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) fighting together. It also gives us more glimpses of the Taskmaster – for the uninitiated Taskmaster has appeared in Marvel Comics as a supervillain, sleeper agent but sometimes an antihero too.
Black Widow movie is set post Captain America: Civil War and before Avengers: Infinity Wars hence Natasha is on a run and is in Budapest with her former Russian KGB family. The trailer shows a number of women being combat trained inside the red rooms and in various instances, they are shown using different fighting styles and different arms – just like Natasha has done over the years.
But if you look closely there are hidden Easter eggs and signs that eventually point at the possibility of Marvel preparing to set up Yelena as next Black Widow. Oscar-nominated actor Florence Pugh is playing the role and by far seems convincing. The character first appeared in 1999 in the MCU as a foe to Natasha Romanov and is a Super Adaptoid (programmed to seek out a human being, replicate their attributes and appearance, and then destroy them.)
For the movies, it seems a farfetched theme but Marvel can use the character’s power further if the mutant cross over happens. For now, it seems like Marvel will follow its suite of Black Widow miniseries and Natasha will try to redeem Yelena to get some red out of her ledger.
Another major hint is the white suit worn by the Widows. It reconfirms the effects of Black Widow miniseries. So, ideally, Marvel will use the Budapest as the redemption ground playing up the previous theme of Hawkeye-redeeming-Natasha to now Natasha-redeeming-Yalena and passing on the Black Widow mantle to her.
