While Zack Snyder’s Cut of Justice League is making a lot of noise, it sure has uncanny parallels with Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame
Fans, like this writer, were disappointed by the treatment of the iconic superheroes in the 2017 Justice League theatrical cut. Henry Cavill looked ugly (only CGI could make that happen), Batman was making jokes, and Barry Allen was falling on Wonder Woman. It was instantly clear that this is not Snyder’s movie.
Success graphs of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe are like a mirror image but inverted. The MCU took on with Iron Man in 2008, whereas Man Of Steel became the foundation of DCEU in 2013. But the story from then on has been different for both the studios. Marvel kept on soaring with almost every movie until the dizzying success of the Infinity Saga. DC, well, kept on experimenting and not getting it right.
What is Snyder Cut?
In 2017, WB committed their biggest screwup with Justice League. A movie that not only erred the moviegoers but some of the most ardent DC fans as well. After completing the principal photography of the Justice League, Zack had to leave the project because of his daughter’s suicide. WB called on the Avenger-1 director Joss Whedon to re-model the movie. Then, what hit the theatre was probably worse than the hideous mustache CGI, maybe not, tough call.

Shortly after Justice League tanked at the box office, and rightly so, WB and DC fans were at a loggerhead. Warner Bros banished Zack Snyder and his idea of DCEU. DC movies became brighter, colorful, funny, and basically everything DC is NOT.
Anyway, so the fans started a movement to see the original cut of the Justice League. Warner Bros. kept on denying the existence of any such ‘cut‘ up until AT&T. AT&T acquired Warner Media and launched HBO max, a digital streaming service. Now, to make a name in the galaxy of streaming services, AT&T green-lit the mythical Zack Snyder Justice League in April 2020.
Snyder’s Original 5-movie JL Arc
Though the Snyder-verse temporarily came to a halt in 2017, speculations and rumours about his vision never stopped. It was often reported that Snyder had a 5-movie story arc with Justice League having two sequels. But nothing was confirmed until 2020. Now that we are officially getting to see what was Snyder’s vision with the DCEU, I think there is one interesting similarity with the Avengers saga.
Before the Marvel fans start losing their mind, hear me out. Back in January 2019, during a Vero live Q&A session (video below), a fan asked Zack about his plans for the Justice League. In this session, Zack Snyder gave a brief about his original plans for Justice League.
The original JL plot has an uncanny resemblance to the plot of Avengers Endgame.

“The actual idea – the hard, hard idea, the scary idea – we never filmed because the studio was like ‘That’s crazy.’”Zack Snyder, Director , Justice League
Snyder told the fans, that he and Chris Terrio had started working on the script for Justice League even before Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice released in the theatres. Zack Snyder, in his answer, told about the Knightmare and Flash sequences from BVS.
He explained, “It’s a long story. The truth is that the Knightmare sequence in this movie was always my idea that all of that would eventually be explained … and that we would end up in the distant future, where Darkseid has taken over Earth and where Superman has succumbed to the Anti-Life. There were a few members of the Justice League that had survived in that world, that they were fighting. Batman broke a pact with Cyborg because something happened… They were working on an equation to jump Flashback to tell Bruce.”
Zack Snyder’s Endgame
Now, let me draw some parallels for you and why I think that Endgame and Snyder Cut is going to have lots of uncanny resemblances. As per Snyder, in the second movie, the Justice League faces off against Darkseid and loses. It not only kills some of the main members of the League but also leaves the rest of the League in shambles. Now, think of what happened at the end of Avengers: Infinity Wars. Half of the living beings on Earth along with Avenger members dust away after Thanos’ snap.
Wonder Woman and Aquaman die while in a battle with Darkseid’s army. Whereas, Loki and Vision die in a battle with Thanos.

Further, in the third Justice League instalment, Batman, Cyborg, and Flash experiment with time travel. If Batman is able to save Lois Lane from Darkseid then the Knightmare sequence will not occur. Endgame had a similar Time Travel plot.
The Murder of Lois Lane changed the whole dynamics of the team is what happened with Avengers after Black Widow’s death.
In the end, probably the biggest similarity between the two story-arcs is the sacrifice of both Batman and Iron Man. To save the world and their fellow teammates, Batman and Iron Man in Justice League and Endgame give the ultimate sacrifice. Bruce lets Darkseid kill him rather than Lois so that Superman does not succumb to Anti-Life and not let Knightmare Sequence come true.
Now, these could just be mere co-incidences. We will probably see a part of it happening in the upcoming Zack Snyder Justice League cut in 2021. But, if Zack had been allowed to carry on with this vision back in 2017, would the standing of DCEU be different right now? Would the Russo Brothers have changed the plot of their Avengers’ movies? Maybe, even we would need time travel to get these questions answered.
