Henry Cavill’s Superman was at the heart of Zack Snyder’s 5-movie Justice League arc. Finally, the time has come for the Kryptonian to be seen in his true spirit
The new justice League trailer literally starts with a different perspective of Superman’s death. His screams are sending sound waves which are cleverly combined with Lex Luthor’s voice-over. ‘The bell’s rung, the god is dead.’ Observant viewers can spot the damage to Superman’s suit and it’s certainly not repairing anytime soon. Avid fans and casual onlookers know alike, Superman will don a black suit in the Snyder Cut.
The director had been hyping the black suit for a while now and we got a good look at it in the new trailer. While Superman’s black suit is a nod to his regenerative abilities, Snyder raise the stakes by adding the Knightmare sequence to the Justice League.
The Significance of the Black Suit
At the end of Batman Vs Superman we saw Superman sacrificing himself to save the day. We see his funeral and how Batman is severally affected by his death and the coming attack. That inspires the Batman to form ‘new alliances’ to defend earth.
In Joss-tice League, the effects of Superman’s sacrifice have been demeaned. We see some random kid vlogging about him and let’s not even talking about Henry Cavill’s upper lip! Snyder Cut is going to override this, thankfully. Another change Joss Whedon brought was to do away with the black suit. Apparently, Warner Bros was never sure about Snyder using it given the darker tone and theme it represents. Snyder had to fight his way through. The only reason we know about it is the Blu ray deleted scene and the director’s own words.

Now in the new trailer, we see the suit in full action. There’s a very clever visual call back to a Mon of Steel moment. Cavill has his knuckles on the ground which is vibrating as he is set to take a flight. This time around we can see him in the black suit. Probably the scene comes when Superman is resurrected in Snyder Cut.
In a recent interview , Snyder explains the suits connection to ‘old world’ and signifies Superman’s relationship with Krypton and his family. He said, “It’s interesting the black suit. Because you can say, in modern Krypton, when he left…everyone was wearing black suits, mostly, you know? So, it is sort of linked to…in some ways, to the old world. I think it’s a more direct relationship to his family.”

The Transition from Black to Blue Suit
Traditionally in comic books Kal-El dons a Black Suit when he’s weakened and is regenerating. We know in live-action Superman is going to be brought back to life and it’ll take him a while to gather himself. In a previous clip released by Snyder, we see Cavill in black suit meeting Alfred for the first time.
Whilst the black suit signifies Kal-El’s old world connection the iconic blue suit is the ‘hero suit’. The symbol of hope. In Snyder’s world Superman is still coming to terms with his place as the ‘hero’ or ‘saviour’ in this world.
“The blue suit is his ‘Suit of a Hero,'” Snyder continued. “The ‘Suit of His Destiny.’ Where like, the black suit is his more personal in a lot of ways. One is outward and one is inward. And I think that those things [are] the expression of that. Let’s put it this way…it was always my intention that the larger arc of the movies was to realize that more completely. But I think you get a sense of it here.”
The larger arc means the Sueprman’s story arc that Snyder had in mind before stepping down from the directorial position of 2017 Justice League. In his cut the director can now finally bring in the Superman not only the world deserves but need!
