Losing the Time Stone in Avengers: Endgame can mean a lot of trouble Sorcerer Supreme in the MCU
After Thanos destroyed the Infiniti Stones in Endgame and Captain Rogers returned the borrowed ones to their respective timelines, MCU lost all of its cosmic gems. And it has led to a reshape in its storyline big-time. And while the stones are sources of power, the Time Stone plays a far more significant role in the MCU.
The absence of Time stone in MCU Phase 4 raises many questions we need answers to in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Let’s find out some of these
What Is The New Purpose of Doctor Strange?
In Doctor Strange (2016), we learned that the Sanctums had mystic portals to various dimensions. However, we saw Doctor Strange embracing the responsibility of protecting the Eye of Agamotto, which held the Time Stone in it. It was his ultimate purpose for which he was willing to sacrifice anything. However, the Time Stone is no more in existence now. So, we have to think about what Doctor Strange’s new purpose will be.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may bring in new tools for the Sorcerer Supreme, like the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, the Book of Vishanti, the Ebony Blade, Dragonfang, Axe of Angarruumus, and others.
It might require more training on his part, although much less than that in Doctor Strange, now that he is an expert. He acquired his knowledge about magic spells by reading books. And this is unlike Scarlett Witch or Captain Marvel, as they have the energy of the stones imbued within them. But this might be another way for bigger things to occur in the future. The Time Stone was used to undo the destruction of New York. And its absence will raise the stakes higher and may show us that actions do have consequences.
Doctor Strange’s New Friends & Foes
In Doctor Strange, we saw him trap Dormammu in an endless time loop until he left planet Earth alone. Now, with the Time Stone gone, there are high chances of the return of the Lord of the Dark Dimension. Other powerful villains, like Nightmare, Umar the Unrelenting, Shuma-Gorath, or Mephisto, may also find their way to planet earth, knowing that Strange has lost his ultimate weapon.
Yet, a villain we bank on, more than all others, is Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
As evident in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange, we see him cripple Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt) back to his earlier state by taking back his magical powers. He saw Strange’s use of the Time Stone as an abuse of magic and vowed to bring down sorcerers around the world to keep magic in check. Now the loss of Time Stone will only add to his rage against Strange. And the fact that he knows a lot about sorcery, sorcerers, and the Sanctums gives him an advantage.
However, Doctor Strange will be finding new allies too. Reports say that Xochitl Gomez has been given an unknown role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
According to rumours, two new superheroes might also debut. Nonetheless, they can be Brother Vodoo – Klea Strange and Jericho Drumm. Both these characters play a significant role in Marvel’s mystic mythos, and Doctor Strange’s lore as a whole. Jericho Drumm has also held the title of Sorcerer Supreme.
The Sorcerer Supreme Opening The Multiverse
Doctor Strange took us on, perhaps, the most visually enthralling trip across the multiverse thanks to the Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton. This was when she showed Stephen Strange what he does not know.
Watch: The Ancient Gives Stephen Strange a Glimpse of the Multiverse
The Time Stone maintained the flow and fabric of all the different realities.
But with Time Stone now gone, the continuum might be damaged forever. Another reason for the damage to the continuum can be Thanos’s or Tony’s “snaps” which may have caused rifts of cosmic proportions. However, the most viable reason seems to be when Thanos destroyed the gems towards the beginning of Endgame. We saw a hint of this mixing of alternate realities in Spider-Man: Far From Home when Mysterio arrives along with the Elementals, apparently, from another Earth.
A Spider-verse On The Way Before The Multiverse?
Another strong rumour that stresses on the mixing of universes is that Spider-Man 3 will involve a Spider-verse. Actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be playing Spider-Man in their respective universes. We might also see Miles Morales, although who will play the character is still unknown.
Without the Time Stone, Doctor Strange may have to do a great deal of universe-hopping to make everything right in the MCU. For this, he will need his friend Wong and other colleagues and use their sling rings to travel realities. Sanctums will be coming together again. New threats will arrive, and stronger defences will be forged. Be that as it may, all these are speculations, and we have to wait a while to find out what’s in store. If only we could possess the Time Stone.
