Will Smith’s career is at stake. He seems to be destroying his career and throwing himself out of Hollywood A-listers. If he doesn’t innovate in the instant – he may risk his career big time.
Will Smith, is undoubtedly one of the most powerful actors in Hollywood. The Fresh Prince has won 4 Grammy Awards in his career. Smith stands as a representative of the waning force of the A-List headliners. But lately, there is a downfall coming in Will Smith’s career. He has been a box-office staple, making some of the most profitable movies in history like Independence Day, Men in Black, The Pursuit of Happyness, iRobot and many others.
Smith is a big name in the entertainment industry for almost 30 years now. He is also the most likable and charismatic figure in a business that filters such as individuals with increasing speed. However, for the past 5 years, Will Smith’s career trajectory is becoming questionable. He has faced a number of disastrous flops lately. His latest movie, “Gemini Man,” is another major studio release that is underwhelming. The movie failed to live up to expectations that Will Smith has created in his successful career.
Bright couldn’t glow
Will Smith’s Bright, with a budget of $90m, was expected to be a blockbuster. Although it can’t be called a flop, Bright is hardly the greatest moment of the thoroughly mixed bag that is Will Smith’s career. According to critics, Smith’s latest work is a flop.
The movie is a Netflix exclusive fantasy cop drama. Bright is less than glowing with some calling it the absolute worst film of 2017. The most unbearably bad product is a mere click away to satisfy a morbid curiosity, that’s the beauty of Netflix. However, one strong point that Bright made was that the movie raised more questions than answers. It’s another strange addition to the filmography of one of the most famous actors on the planet.
Gemini Man: A surprising flop
Paramount’s “Gemini Man,” was Will Smith’s latest action movie directed by two- time Oscar-winner Ang Lee. In the movie, Smith is facing off with a younger version of himself. However, after much hype, Gemini Man only brought in $1.6 million at Thursday night previews. Will Smith is still terrific, even if he’s more engaging as “old Will Smith” than “young Will Smith.”
In Will Smith’s career, Gemini Man is one of his biggest flops at the box office. Fight scenes seem edited for minimum impact and the stunt work lacks the invention and energy displayed in 2002’s The Bourne Identity, where Clive Owen played a bad guy, as he does again here. Gemini Man is also the lowest opening weekend for a Will Smith action movie since 1995’s sleeper hit Bad Boys, has gone on to make two sequels.
Aladdin: A Career Highlight Flop
Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin marks Smith’s biggest box office stint to date. Acting as the genie is one of the greatest highlights of his career. Will is playing the Genie in Guy Ritchie’s liveactionAladdinmovie. Fans said the big blue man from the lamp gave them “nightmares” and compared him to a giant Smurf.
However, Poor production values, lame jokes, shoddy editing and a general feeling of low standards pervaded the films and TV shows aimed at developing eyeballs. There’s no excuse for a disappointing centerpiece in a film with seemingly endless possibilities for visualization. The movie was a huge blow to Will butt he is his big chance to reinvigorate the Smith family brand, which itself has hit the rocks.
Third Bad Boys could be thrice as bad
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence took their talents to South Beach for the action-packed buddy-cop classic Bad Boys. A pitch-perfect mix of high-octane action and humor, it made film stars of both Smith and Lawrence. This project has been stuck in development hell for a long time now and there have been more than a few false starts along the way.
The movie is the third installment in the Bad Boys franchise. The movie will also decide Will Smith’s career as the A-lister in Hollywood. A third Bad Boys film was discussed after the success of the second, with original director Michael Bay. Talk of Bad Boys III started while II was still in theaters, but after years and countless fits and starts, we’re still waiting. At this point, there are more than a few good reasons to think a third Bad Boys may never happen.
Time for Smith to hang the hero boots?
But even if Bad Boys happens, and Smith continues on his course to many more movies as the protagonist, the star has somehow lost his charm. He doesn’t command the same kind of following as he did half a decade ago. He tried to get into the superhero brigade but royally failed.
Hollywood is under a phase of transition where more muscular actors are bringing in the dough instead of terrific talents like Smith who rely on timing, delivery, and expressions instead of buffing themselves up. The demise of his career is also synonymous with the resurgence of the ‘Action Hero’ era of the 80s and 90s. But that’s a story for another day. Will Smith is a global star with versatility like no other, but the recent trend of how his flicks are faring on the box office hints at a darker tomorrow for the star, and maybe reveals a bigger trend.
