Groot was an orphan. And so is Baby Groot. Rocket is the only one who ever understood both of them. Only he knows the answer.
Ever wondered who is Groot’s dad? Groot, the sentient tree character who became the most loved in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. But at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot dies. Before dying he managed to use the opportunity to give birth to his own son.

Baby Groot is his son, not his resurrected form.
After seeing the baby Groot fans were full of questions, “Is Baby Groot, Groot? Or is Baby Groot actually Groot’s progeny?”
Guardians of the Galaxy director to this said James Gunn, “Baby Groot is not Groot. He’s a different character and he does not have that character’s memories.”
The Bond between Groot and Rocket
Groot, the sentient tree character who became a breakout favorite character in the first Guardians, is dead. In the film, Groot is shattered while saving his friends, but his partner Rocket plants a piece of him which grows into a cute infant version of Groot (Baby Groot).
Groot is an extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature that came from Planet X (as per the comics). He is the member of Star-Lord’s Guardians of the Galaxy and longtime friend with Rocket Raccoon.
Rocket Raccoon is the only person who could understand Groot or Baby Groot. In all the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Rocket holds entire dialogues with Groot, and he seems convinced that each “I am Groot” is actually saying something different.
In the Avengers: Infinity War, we saw teenage Groot suddenly die when Thanos kills half the life in the universe with a snap. As he Groot is fading into oblivion, he says one last “I am Groot” to Rocket, which only the foul-mouthed critter could understand.

When asked to James Gunn on what Groot actually said, the director offered up a translation.
Who is Groot’s dad?
Rocket Raccoon is not Groot’s actual father. Gunn previously explained that Baby Groot, a version of the character we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is the genetic son of the adult Groot from the first Guardians.

Although Rocket isn’t Groot’s biological father, he is the closest emotional equivalent. It’s not like Guardians of the Galaxy are immune to emotional stories about father figures and sons.

Rocket was the one who looked after Groot, raising him from his baby years into his angsty teen self. He had help from Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax, but as far as pseudo-father figures go, Rocket is the closest to Groot. So who is Groot’s dad?
“Dad” may only be one word, but it’s led to a whole new way of thinking about the relationship between Rocket and Groot.
If Groot thinks of Rocket as a father figure, that also means Rocket may think of Groot as a son. This emotional trauma of watching his Groot disintegrate before his eyes and the rest of the family dead have to be weighing on Rocket.
So Who is Groot’s Dad folks!!!
