WandaVision trailer gave us a good look at Scarlet Witch’s powers and magical mysteries of Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel Studios dropped the first trailer for its Disney + series WandaVision and ended the dry spell of content. The trailer has broken every possible record left, right and centre. It got 55 million views in first 24 hours and has left behind even Avengers: Infinity War Superbowl commercial that garnered 30 million views in the same timeframe!
Watch: WandaVision | Official Trailer | Disney+
The numbers simply proves the loyal fan base the Studio has earned in the past decade. While Black Widow was set to open the MCU Phase 4 now due to, the Coronavirus delay the responsibility falls on WandaVision’s shoulder. The new trailer doesn’t fall short of anything in fact, we haven’t seen Marvel doing such quirky things ever before.
Wanda’s Transformation To Scarlet Witch
When it comes to Wanda’s portrayal and her power set Marvel comics and movies do not see eye to eye. When the character was first introduced in Age of Ultron Marvel didn’t had the rights to pronounce the ‘M’ word but with Fox-Disney merger things have come far.
Wanda and her brother Peter are children of Magneto, while Fox touched the Quicksilver connection in their X-men franchise. Marvel has to resort to the mind stone to give them their powers. The ‘twins’ who survived Hydra’s experiments, as Maria Hill explained to Captain America, ‘he’s fast and she is weird.’
Wanda’s weirdness was never explained however, she was shown using her telekinetic power giving Avengers hallucinations and moving things with her mind. Even in the BTS video, Elizabeth Olsen explained her instructions by Joss Whedon were shooting red energy from her hands and the awkwardness it brought.
However, we saw Anthony and Joe Russo exploiting her power level in the Endgame. A large consensus believes that in a showdown between Wanda and Thanos would have resulted in the latter’s defeat. Even Marvel Head Kevin Feige admitted in a 2016 interview that Wanda will be retconned as a sorceress whose powers are parallel to likes of Doctor Strange. He said
She never had any training; she’s figuring it out. Arguably, you could say that that’s why her powers are much more chaotic and much more loose in the way that we showcased those light effects…. It’s all about focus. It’s all about pulling energies from other dimensions in an organized and purposeful fashion, which is why they can do a lot more than she can in, at least, a much more precise way.”
Nonetheless, the new trailer does retcons Wanda’s transformation into Scarlet Witch.
Wanda As Witch In the Trailer
We see a glimpse of her psionic abilities and energy manipulation which shows she certainly has the potential to time jump and warp reality. We see Wanda swapping Vision’s face, reconstructing the furniture and even unleashing her full potential in sucking Monica Rambeau in another dimension (notice the scarlet light she is wrapped in when she crashes on land).
These signs show that Wanda is finally Scarlet Witch who can manipulate reality just like Doctor Strange. The trailer has references to House of M comics that sees Wanda in a fragile mental state and creating new reality with Vision alive and a pair of twins – which we have seen in the trailer as well. All of this coupled with presence of Kathryn Hahn as Agatha witch further confirms the true potential of Wanda’s powers. Agatha in the comic is Wanda’s mentor and works for Mephisto, so in the show we can expect her to mess further with Wanda’s mind.
As Doctor Strange explained to The Avengers in Avengers #503 that power to warp reality comes at its cost”. Can you understand the delicate mindset of a woman, a person, who has control over reality? It means reality controls her. Imagination becomes the enemy. Structure disappears.”
So Wanda’s transformation into Scarlet Witch is taking MCU into a vulnerable direction. And mind you she can be a bigger threat than Thanos – she just needs a word to snap away whoever she wants and there’s no coming back!
