Russo brother’s new movie Cherry dropped its first look and Tom Holland looks brilliant
Actor Tom Holland is taking over Hollywood. The Spider-Man star is shooting for the third instalment of Marvel & Sony’s joint MCU venture. Meanwhile, the first look of his other venture with Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s Cherry came out. And it’s least to say Tom looks hauntingly woeful!
Plot of Cherry
The movie is based on the 2018 novel by Nico Walker. The story revolves around an unnamed narrator’s experience in college and during Iraq war. Further, it chronicles a PTSD ridden soldier who returns from the war in midst of American opioid epidemic. In turn of events he turns into a drug addict and start robbing banks to fulfill his addictive needs.
The screenplay is written by Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg. Along with Holland, the movie stars Ciara Bravo, Bill Skarsgård, Kelli Berglund, Jack Reynor and more. Interestingly the movie is a love story. Anthony Russo told Vanity Fair, “The love story is the central spine of the film.”

Nonetheless, it looks like the only bright aspect of the movie. The action sequences are going to be as badass as any other Russo film, take your cue from Extraction, Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame.
Joe Russo explained to VF, “This is a movie that’s supposed to define the experience of having PTSD, the experience of being addicted to opioids. And the mission of the film is to generate empathy, not to generate disdain, not to indict. It was critical that you empathize with his struggle and his journey because a lot of people are going through this, and they’re having a very human experience.”
Tom Holland’s Approach To The Character
The Russos have handled the mental health topics effortlessly in the past. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor suffers from major PTSD in Avengers: Endgame. To audiences surprise he gains a LOT of weight in contrast to his chiseled figure. Thor almost feels he isn’t worthy anymore. However by the end of the flick his confidence comes back but he doesn’t lose weight instantly. Indeed Thor comes face to face with the Mad Titan in his bulgy avatar and gives him a worthy fight. The underlining message is quite clear to the audience.
Similarly Holland’s character Cherry is dark and gloomy so the duo wanted someone with a sense of innocence to play the part. Hence, Holland was called in for his ‘effortless charm’ that he portrays Peter Parker aka Spider-man with.
Anthony Russo explained, “As an actor that is very difficult to replicate. He’s (Tom Holland) just so likable. We knew for this part we were going to need someone of Tom’s charisma to keep the audience from shutting down during the darker parts of the film.”
While we have seen Tom Holland in most charming ways Cherry will be an interesting addition to his filmography. The movie releases on 26 February 2021 in theatres and Apple TV+.
