GoT and Aquaman star Jason Momoa is rumoured to feature in the Witcher spinoff Blood Origins
For a lot of Netflix fans who’ve had to endure a long wait for their favourite shows to resume, the news that production was beginning to pick up again could not have come any sooner. After airing its first season in 2019, The Witcher quickly became a fan favourite leading to the announcement of its renewal for a second season along with a spin-off series. However, production was affected by the pandemic and resumed last month only to shut down and resume again.
Is Jason Momoa Playing The First Witcher?
Meanwhile, fans of the show had been keeping themselves busy during the lockdown by creating several fan-art images. One particular one that made the rounds was of Jason Momoa standing back-to-back with Henry Cavill. Momoa, who plays Aquaman in the DCEU, later posted the fan-art image on his page with the caption “what’s up homie?” tagging Henry Cavill. This rekindled rumours that Jason Momoa is being courted to play the first Witcher in the upcoming spin-off series The Witcher: Blood Origin. The 6-episode prequel is said to be set 1200 years before the time of Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia.
Much of the excitement is too early to call because no official announcement has been made confirming Momoa’s casting for the role. And even if he eventually gets casted for the role, Momoa’s Witcher is expected to exist over a thousand years before Cavill’s Witcher. So except there is an unlikely timeline jump, we are certainly not seeing any Cavill in the spinoff series. On the other hand, the spinoff series could be a used as a link to explain some details they could explore in the sequel to The Witcher which is also in production.
What Is The Plot Of The Witcher: Blood Origin?
As per Netflix’s logline, the story of first Witcher is “set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time – the origin of the very first Witcher.”
Jason Momoa owes much of his public acclaim to his indelible performance as Khal Drogo on season one of the Game of Thrones series. He also plays the King of Ocean, Arthur Curry / Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) while he acts as Baba Voss in the Apple TV+ show, See, which has already been renewed for a second season. He was also seen in Netflix’s Frontier season 3.
Watch: The Witcher: Blood Origin Netflix Spin-off Series Announced
As production plans develop, more details about The Witcher 2 and the prequel spinoff The Witcher: Blood Origin will be released. It will not also be surprising at this point if Momoa is casted as the first Witcher. His track record has seen him thrive in the kind of settings that The Witcher provides. With extensive on-screen combat scenes and a rugged physique conditioned for the outdoors, is there a chance Momoa could be a much better Witcher than Henry Cavill?
Are There Any Other Witcher Spinoff’s?
Fortunately, the fluidity in the present-day entertainment industry allows studios like Netflix conveniently ride the waves of trend. If a spinoff series with Momoa goes on to become a major fan favourite – perhaps even more than both seasons of Cavill’s version – what’s going to stop them from releasing a prequel to a sequel?
The Witcher cast Henry Cavill in the titular role as Geralt of Rivia, along with Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra and others. The spinoff series Witcher: Blood Origin is being developed by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who also created the original show. She will serve as an executive producer with Declan de Barra as the showrunner. Taking place 1,200 years before the event of The Witcher, in a different world, the prequel will focus on the incidents that lead to the pivotal ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the world of men, monsters and elves merged to become one.
