In the upcoming Spider-Man movie, we will see a classic Spider villain Hobgoblin and it looks like Peter Parker’s best friend Ned is up for it.
Now that Marvel has made a new deal with Sony for Spider-Man 3 that will be different from what Sony could ever have done on its own with the character. We will see a new villain Hobgoblin for the upcoming Spider-Man movie. Spider-Man 3 will also be the last appearance of Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hence its storyline is significant. But there are rumours he will appear in one of the MCU phase 4 movies.
After Spider-Man 3, we will see Holland appear in Sony’s own cinematic universe of villains with Venom, Carnage, and Morbius. And of the villains, there’s a character in this Spider-Man series that could grow into his role from the comics. That character is Ned Leeds Actor Jacob Batalon who is Peter Parker’s best friend. We have seen Ned as Spider-Man aka Peter Parker’s best friend in comics as well as in the latest Spider-Man movie.
Ned to become Hobgoblin
In a recent interview, Jacob Batalon expressed that he would like to see Ned fulfill his destiny and become Hobgoblin. Expressing his desire to become Spider-Man villain Hobgoblin. He said, “That just further validates my theory of Ned becoming Hobgoblin, but hey… But it’d be so great (if) they’re not going to want me to die. (I hope) they’re going to want me to stay on and be part of the Sinister Six. That’s just my theory.” Batalon made his debut in MCU from Spider-Man: Homecoming and then in Far From Home. Now it looks like for the upcoming Spider-Man movie, Ned character will be taking a dark turn.
Hobgoblin is the classic Marvel supervillains appearing in American comic books and are the enemies of Spider-Man. The character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #238. Roderick Kingsley is the original, longest-running and possibly best-known Hobgoblin in the comics. Roderick Kingsley was a successful fashion designer and millionaire who had built his empire through underworld ties and unethical practices.
Hobgoblin in Comics
In the 90s animated series, Spider-Man villain Hobgoblin is voice by legend, Mark Hamill. And his character experienced an arc that went from friend of Peter to enemy of Spider-Man’s. He was even ready to marry Mary Jane at one point. Though Batalon’s character is pretty tight with Holland’s, I can see the MCU going this route. But it might take the brainwashing from Roderick Kingsley to do so.
They may still want to do the Sinister Six. Marvel Studios are fully capable to give Spider-Man an amazingly insane plot twist. Marvel has not yet revealed what plot they’ll settle with at this point. If the franchise adds Ned as the Hobgoblin, the villain of Spider-Man the plot will become really interesting. For starters, there is some precedent for it, as in the comic books. The friend gone bad is a classic trope that could add a lot of emotional, and personal, weight to the MCU’s Spider-Man stories.
Spider-Man villain Hobgoblin
Till now there has never been an onscreen appearance of Spider-Man villain, Hobgoblin. He was rumoured several times before coming into the franchise. Kevin Feige on multiple occasions stated that they want to break new ground and they don’t want to use villains that have already been done.
Moving Hobgoblin from comic book to Spider-Man 3 would not only able to pay homage to the classic Goblin-Esque villains within Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. The only thing they need to keep in mind is that they do it in a fresh way. Spider-Man 3 is set to release on 16th July 2021.
