After over two decades of storytelling led by heroes being pitted against villains DC has is set to bring in a new narrative with Snyder Cut & Black Adam
During its virtual FanDome event that took place last year, DC had some pretty interesting news about its upcoming movies and feature films to share with fans. After the underwhelming performance of its last few movies, DC has been making deliberate moves to ensure that the next projects on its roster have a better showing. From new directors to rewritten scripts and even replaced actors, DC knows it has its work cut out for it if it’s going to raise the bar once more.
And it starts with the coveted Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max this March. Snyder brings to life his fabled cut just for fans. Warner Brothers is using their streaming platform to bring fans what they want and increase their anticipation as well. The studio already gained many viewers thanks to Wonder Woman 1984 which despite its plot holes and negative reviews garnered millions of views and enhanced steaming time. While Snyder’s four-part Director’s Cut of Justice League will end mid-April, nonetheless, DC still has its most powerful character to reveal Black Adam.

Enter Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam
One character whose introduction has excited DC fans for some time now is Dwayne Johnson’s aka The Rock’s Black Adam. The introduction of an anti-hero such as Black Adam presents DC with an opportunity to move away from the usual protagonist vs antagonist plots that plague most superhero movies.
Of course, with Johnson set to play Black Adam (and making no small fuss about it), there has been a lot of excitement and hope that the WWE superstar can infuse a much-needed spark into the DCEU. During the Black Adam session at last year’s virtual FanDome, Dwayne Johnson shared updates on production progress and introduced Noah Centineo (To All The Boys) as Atom Smasher. A couple of weeks later, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson took to his Instagram page to reveal that Aldis Hodge would be playing Hawkman in the upcoming Black Adam movie.
The JSA in DC comics predate the Justice League by one or two decades and consists of heroes like Doctor Fate, Atom, Hawkman and Cyclone. With two members already confirmed for Black Adam, it could unconsciously herald the start of a new kind of superhero storytelling.

A New Age Of Anti-Heroes
While we’re used to superhero movie plots where the hero battles the villain, Black Adam is going to explore a group of superhumans who aren’t villains, but wouldn’t be referred to as heroes either. They’re usually termed antiheroes. Black Adam has been known to fight for good causes which occasionally puts him on the bandwagon of the Justice League. However, he doesn’t hesitate to jump ship once he doesn’t agree with the tactics or rules.
The Black Adam movie would be DC’s first Anti-hero led sequence in the modern era of storytelling. We’ve already seen them explore villain stories like Suicide Squad (2016) and Joaquin Phoenix’s The Joker (2019). Furthermore, Margot Robie’s Harley Quinn (Birds of Prey)released in 2020 garnered a lot of positive reviews.
After over two decades of storytelling led by heroes being pitted against villains, perhaps DC has foreseen possible hero fatigue. Exploring new story arcs like villains and anti-heroes could be the catalyst DC needs to stay relevant in the new decade. And who knows even Henry Cavill can make a come back as Superman.
Black Adam casts Dwayne Johnson in the titular role along with Noha Centineo as He-Man. Trinkets star Quintessa Swindell is the latest to be added to the ensemble as Cyclone. The movie’s release date has been set for 22nd December 2021.
