There has been a lot of conjecture around Namor’s MCU debut but with Secret Wars, it’s likely that his arrival can lead to another Civil War
The arrival of Namor could lead to another Civil War in the MCU. The first Civil War that dealt with the Sokovia Accords and saw the Avengers fall apart for the long-term. And while they did come together to fight Thanos in Endgame, members of Team Cap are still “vigilantes.” As it seems the Sokovia Accords aren’t forgotten and will continue in MCU Phase 4. With new Avengers debuting in the MCU, we might see Namor starting MCU Civil War II to culminate in Secret Wars crossover event.
Can Civil War II Play Out In MCU Future
In 2016 comic, an Inhuman named Ulysses was the root cause of the Civil War II. His ability to see the future put forward a question of free will. And if a person could be judged based on something he or she had not yet done. While Captain Marvel agreed, Tony didn’t. He had already been through one Civil War and believed in free will and the undetermined nature of the future. All this was the result of Ulysses who foresaw Miles Morales killing Captain America. A huge debate took place over this and eventually Civil War II happened.
To borrow comic matter for the cinematic version of Civil War II will be difficult. This is because Tony Stark is dead. Period. Also, mutants will be arriving at the MCU. (And technically speaking, Namor is one of Marvel’s first mutants.) Consequently, how Marvel decides to form a battlefield for Civil War II can only be pondered upon. However, Namor should be a part of it, as in the comics, he has been a member of almost every superhero group, including the Avengers. So it is high time to have in on-board the MCU.
Namor in the MCU
There have been Namor Easter eggs in the MCU. The first apt conjecture comes in the post-credits scene of Iron-Man 2 (2010). When Tony and Fury are talking, there is a screen we see in the background where the world map is visible. To be precise, we see Africa where a location is mapped. This was supposedly Wakanda which we can now tell. However, it is the location on the left that maps on the Atlantic Ocean. This location has turned into Easter-Egg signalling the presence of Atlantis, home of Namor. So, it does seem that Namor is somewhere in the MCU and may arrive soon.
Watch: Iron-Man 2 Post Credits Scene Showing Atlantis
The Easter-Egg may lead to people question Tony, if not now then later, as to why he kept the knowledge of Atlantis hidden. Well, the comics have the answer already. Unlike Wakanda, the relationship of the people of Atlantis with land-dwellers is anything but friendly. They are a highly-advanced militaristic race and are incredibly protective of their territory. And whoever marked the location on the map knew about the nature of Atlanteans. So all this raises one crucial question- Why did Tony keep the presence of Atlantis a secret? Was he afraid of something?
Furthermore, in 2019 Avengers: Endgame Black Widow asks Okoye about a earthquake in the ocean. Okoye tells her, ‘we handle it by not handling it.’ Many fans believe this reference is another Easter egg for Namor’s MCU debut most probably in Black Panther 2.
In the recent Disney’s Investor Day official programming sheet fans have noticed a spot for a ‘Mystery Marvel Movie’ slated for October 7, 2022 right between Black Panther and Captain Marvel sequel. This could be the Namor movie fans have been waiting for, Furthermore, Kevin Feige announced a Secret Wars series dubbing it MCU’s next Civil War. Given Namor has Wakanda connection his movie can be the start of MCU Civil War tieing into Captain Marvel 2 that was announced to connects to MCU Secret Wars on Disney+.
The Sub Mariner Can Start Another Civil War
The debut of Namor in the MCU “won’t be nice.” As mentioned earlier, the Atlanteans do not like to be disturbed beyond their territory. However, Earth’s curiosity is a different ball game. This is exactly what Thor said in The Avengers (2012).
“Your work with the Tesseract is what drew Loki to it….it is a signal to all the realms that the earth is ready for a higher form of war.”Thor, Marvel’s The Avengers
This we have seen later in the works of Red Skull, Tony’s experiment and the birth of Ultron, and even the twins (Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch) who were created in the name of science. Also, the Infinity Stones have brought only tears, with mankind meddling with cosmic forces. And who can disagree that once Atlantis becomes known to all, Secretary Ross or the UN won’t send their troops there for a recon?
Watch: How Namor Will Play A Key Role In Marvel Phase 4
In the Marvel comics, Namor was never a hero but an anti-hero. His home is his first priority and he will not compromise its safety for anyone, not even humans. And this is what has put him at odds with many superheroes. So if Earth sends in its troops to assess Atlantean resources, Namor will not hesitate once before destroying it. And this, on the UN’s part, will be an act of war. This will hold Namor playing a key role in MCU Civil War II.
Team Namor in MCU Phase 4
Atlantis is in many ways like Wakanda. And before T’Challa revealed his kingdom to the world, Wakanda too stayed in the shadows. In the comics too, Black Panther and Namor have often crossed paths, sometimes as enemies but mostly as allies.
So if Atlantis is attacked by outside forces, Wakanda is sure to choose sides with the Atlanteans. Others who will be on the team can include Scarlett Witch due to her past experiences of being oppressed. Shang-Chi’s morality can lead him to stand with Atlanteans too. Namor also faced the Fantastic Four in the comics. And with the latter arriving at the MCU soon, they might also stand against Namor. The other side shall have those in favour of the Sokovia Accords, like War-Machine, Spider-Man, and other new ones. The peacemakers here can be Captain Marvel, Bucky, Falcon, and Ant-Man.
Be that as it may, the wounds of the MCU Civil War healed with the arrival of Thanos. So, it might be the arrival of the next supervillain that brings together Namor and the Avengers together for MCU Avengers 5.
