Nobody roasts their past mistake Like Ryan Reynolds pokes fun at Green Lantern!
Making fun of one’s own characters is a big stunt but not many actors do it. While there are some famous actors who hate their on-screen characters — though popular among the audience — they do not pull off stunts to show their hatred. For example, Emilia Clark regrets the playing the role of Sarah Connor in Terminator: Genisys (2015), Robert Pattinson hates his character Edward from the Twilight saga (2008-2012), and even Kate Winslet finds Rose’s American accent from Titanic, ‘awful’. Numerous other actors have done this time and again. But none has been as savage as Ryan Reynolds in making fun of Green Lantern!
Time to go green! Or maybe not.
Ryan Reynolds’ Relationship With Green Lantern
We all know the response to DC’s Green Lantern (2011) movie was bad, to say the least. From the funny costume — which was completely CGI for no good reason — to the very graphics of the movie including the villain, everything was childish and immature to the extent of being ludicrous.
Ryan Reynolds who plays Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern has since then made fun of it in various ways. However, fans got the first visual glimpse of his potential hatred for the character in Deadpool (2016). During the scene when he is being taken inside the lab, he says the words “please don’t make it green…or animated.” The jibe makes Reynolds’ way of shining light on the character so funny and cool at the same time.

Further, in the post-credit scene of Deadpool 2 (2018), we see him travel back in time using Cable’s (Josh Brolin) time machine and shoot himself (Ryan Reynolds) in the head as he is about to open the script of “Green Lantern”. We also have to give it to the character of Deadpool for giving Ryan Reynolds the freedom to poke fun. After all, it is the Merc With A Mouth’s ability to break the fourth wall and his taste for edge jokes which allows Reynolds to do so.
Reynold’s Reason To Roast Himself
When asked about this at a recent press conference for his upcoming movie Free Guy, Reynolds shared why he loves poking fun at Green Lantern. It is more about talking at himself and not at the other people involved in a project, he told SYFY Wire,
“You’re using its energy [the failure of the character] against it and creating something positive out of it.”
With the Snyder-cut of Justice League coming out on HBO Max, Ryan Reynolds again grabbed the opportunity which involved saving a notoriously bad DC movie by a re-cut done by one of the very visionaries behind it. He released a Reynolds Cut of Green Lantern on his twitter page, cutting it down from 1 hour 54 minutes right to 27 seconds with almost no in-movie footage.
Although the Snyder-Cut won’t have Hal Jordan, when rumours related to his presence in the director’s cut did round along with a presence in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. he found a unique way to shut them down. In his typical vain manner, he tweeted, ‘would love to be in Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie and I’ve heard I may already be in it? #SnyderCut‘.
HBO Max is working on a new Green Lantern series with the creators of Flash and Arrow to revive the character in its true green colours even if on the small screen. Who will play the character has not yet been decided, Reynolds’ chances seem low with the way he has brought down the “fourth wall” on the character.
Reynolds will be seen next in Free Guy which is scheduled release in December 2020.
