While MCU has shown us Rocket Raccoon multiple times, Phase 4 might shed more light upon his origin story and where he has come from.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a much-loved franchise of the MCU. This is partly due to their presence in the Marvel comics and partly, due to the way they have been depicted on-screen. And of all the members of the Guardians, perhaps Rocket Raccoon is everyone’s favourite in some way at least. Yet, we have not seen much about how he was made. Being an important character in the MCU, Rocket Raccoon deserves his origin story revealed. And it seems that this will come true in Marvel’s Phase 4.
As evident, Rocket is not a usual raccoon (or if he is a raccoon). He would be if raccoons carried guns. Yet, after knowing Rocket, it seems that we would love it if we saw a raccoon in the wild with a gun in its hands. That’s how much the character has affected us. Rocket Raccoon has a large presence in the MCU. Not just as a part of the Guardians, but he also accompanied Thor to Nidavellir where Thor forged his Stormbreaker. He survived Thanos’ snap and helped the Avengers bring back the rest. Yet, we do not know where he hails from. But now it seems that Marvel will be making it clear.
Rocket Raccoon in the MCU
In the MCU, scars cover Rocket’s (real name 89P13) body. These might be the results of the painful experiments that he has been subjected to, to give his body a human structure. He was also made to undergo genetic experiments that turned him into an anthropomorphic creature. All his enhanced strength and intelligence, along with his ability to walk, are a result of all these genetic modifications. At one point in Guardians of the Galaxy, he says: “I didn’t ask to get made! I didn’t ask to be torn apart and put back together over and over and turned into some little monster!” His chaotic personality is also a result of his transformation.
As for his origin, we know that he and Groot were together as mercenaries from the beginning (reason unknown). However, one day, while looking for bounty targets in Xandar, they meet Peter Quill (Star-Lord). After a messy chase, all of them ended up arrested. They were taken to the Kyln along and Gamora…and the rest has been history in the making.
Watch: History and Origin of Rocket Raccoon – From Comic Books To MCU Guardians of the Galaxy!
Rocket in Marvel Comics
In comic books, Rocket is shown growing up in an asylum. He was recovered by alien scientists who took him to Halfworld, a society in the Keystone Quadrant star system. An alien race built it as an incarceration facility for keeping their criminals as well as mentally-ill people. The aliens gave the responsibility of looking after these inmates (also known as “Loonies”) to robots.
However, with time, the robots began experimenting on genetically-engineered animals to look after the Loonies instead. Raccoon went on to become the chief Law Officer of Halfworld. He was also “the Guardian of the Keystone Quadrant”, the star system that housed Halfworld. As for Rocket’s relationship with Groot in the comics, they met when Rocket met Star-Lord/Peter Quill and his strike commando team. This team included Deathcry, Mantis, Bug, and Captain Universe.
What we can expect from MCU Rocket’s origin
It means that it will be the only scope for MCU to show the origin of Rocket Raccoon. And if we go by Gunn’s hints we’ll see Rocket’s end too with Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3. We can rely on James Gunn because he is a man who always has a plan. He also mentioned that the Guardians are a group of outsiders who share childhood trauma. This is another big reason for the third film to showcase Rocket’s origin and also taking his revenge. This will be very much akin to what Star-Lord did with Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2.
The origin story of Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy is not much different from the comics.
But we cannot be sure that the “Loonies” storyline will be depicted. The MCU version of Rocket Raccoon may have been experimented on for some other reason, to be used as a weapon maybe. However, what we know is that if his origin is revealed, we will also find out how he met Groot. This will add some fun amidst the trauma. While Guardians of the Galaxy is far away with no official release date yet, we can be sure that it will be significant and tough to watch at the same time.
