Remember in Avengers: Endgame Tony Stark tells Steve Rogers ‘I just want peace,’ or in Age of Ultron he tells the team ‘imagine peace in our times’ or when he successfully privatized ‘world peace.’
We have often seen Tony Stark posing with a peace sign. It’s a common pose now, but what led to our dear Iron Man’s fixation with the peace sign? We have solved the mystery for you and its heartbreaking.
In the MCU Tony Stark’s character was designed to be arrogant, egoistic and a billionaire. ‘Hate’ is what the producers were expecting for the borderline narcissist back in 2008. However, the first Iron Man movie took fans by the storm and overnight made Robert Downey Jr and Marvel Studios a sensation. But it also gave Tony Stark a character arch that defined him over the ten yer Infinity Saga.
The Real Story Behind The Peace Sign
During the first movie, a soldier who wanted a cool photographer with Tony lost his life to a group of terrorists who were targeting Stark in the first place. His death made Stark question his life decision and he spent months grieving the soldier’s death. It was then he opted for the soldier’s fav pose as his signature pose.
In 1963, Stan Lee created Tony Stark as an unlikeable character. It was the time of war and Lee designed a character who was a war profiteer; clearly the gamble for MCU was led by actor Robert Downey Jr.
During the Iron Man movie, the always ‘Mr Right billionaire’ Stark’s character was embodied with capitalism and arrogance. He heads to Afghanistan and shares a Humvee with a group of soldiers who consider him a superhero, one of them poses with a peace sign.
Stark instantly replies with “Yeah, peace,” further adding “I love peace. I’d be out of a job with peace.” After some time, he saw the same young soldier get shot. This was an eye-opener for him. He started viewing peace as an important feature and took wars seriously. from saying he’d be out of the job to obsessing about world peace, Stark’s personality took a turn.

A Character Defining Moment
To date, Tony Stark, MCU’s popular and irreplaceable character is very sensitive towards the issue and this is why you often see him speaking about World Peace at conferences and of course, pose with that same exact pose many times. This is also the reason Stark cut off from all weapon programs.
This also made him create Ultron which resulted in a massive blunder and pushed Avengers to sign Sokovia Accords, another miss. But he kept pushing until the Endgame when peace became one of his motivations to try out and solve the time travel problem along with Peter Parker dusting away. That one instance defined Tony’s entire character arch till his last breath when Pepper Potts tells him he can ‘rest now.’ With the new MCU phase kicking in fans still expect to see Tony Stark worrying some more about intergalactic peace.
Iron Man, we love you 3000!
